Styles of Management
Management styles refer to the processes that managers adopt to get the job done through subordinates. In the past, management was all about having people work for you. Now a day, management is all about working with them as a team to achieve the organizational goals and objectives. Within the management styles we will find that all managers have a management process which covers four major components of managing: Planning, Organizing, Leading and Controlling. The purpose of this paper is not the processes involved and will not be explained in detail.

There are several management styles that can be adopted. However within todays business complexity, not only due to technology and new concepts; but also to the mixture of different culture with in a society, where the working environment can be completely different from one firm to another. Due to these factors it is imperative to adopt a management style and when possible and/or appropriate adopt another management style that will complement your management skills and leadership.

The most common management styles adopted in todays business world are: autocratic management, democratic management, participative management and laissez fair management style.

Ensign Group Facilities Corporation, a firm that owns and operates over 90 skilled nursing facilities throughout the United States, mainly in southern California, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. When operating in the second most regulated field in the United States, it is crucial for the management to adopt the appropriate management style to carry on the daily operations of the business, efficiently and according to the companys policies and procedures as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

I spent six years of my professional carrier as a Marketing Director at Camarillo Healthcare center, a building own by Ensign Group. This firm owns each of the facilities that they operate and let each of them operate in an authoritarian way. This type of operations give each of the buildings administrators and departments managers to have more flexibility in regards to the management style they would adopt; or a mix of them.

Throughout the six years as part of the Ensign Group, Camarillo Healthcare Center (the building I used to work for) was at the bottom of the list based on operating performance and financial results. The first step to turn this building around was to get the right people on the bus. After a year of seeking for the right candidates we finally had a strong knowledgable team that was ready to turn Camarillo Healthcare around by improving its overall performance and overcome any challenges yet to come.
