“White Privilege”
Some sources of privilege I agree with is earning your drivers license, being able to speak your mind and choose what school you want to attend. There are many sources of privileges that the white receive which other cultures may not in the US. Its hard to just choose one example that I may or may not disagree with because I feel I have ran into these situations plenty of time. I never think its fair for me to get a better benefit that a person of another culture but it happens so often. Any privilege that I get that a person of another color does not get I disagree with. I cant agree with any [articular privileges because then I would be agreeing with prejudice and discrimination. Unfortunately this is how our world turns, nothing is fair, there is no such thing as freedom and not everyone is made equal.
Being a female I think privilege works for me and against me in certain instances. Females do receive a lot of respect and I guess being white helps too. Having friends that are of different nationality they are more prone to get neglected or less attention opposed to me simply because I seem to fit into the “American Scene” more. But nevertheless I am an immigrant, and though my skin color tells otherwise I am of a different nationality. There a lot of instances where I could get away with things (not by choice) simply because I am a white girl. Returning to the same convenience store numerous times I sometimes do not get charged for snacks or beverages because they have grown a liking to me but if a Muslim woman was a loyal customer she may have not received that privilege. There is also this club/bar that I attend and they truly discriminate and its just such a shame. They will let you in and if for some reason they do not want you in they will pick on anything you have for instance what your wearing, shoes, or if your lacking two forms of identification just to prevent you from entering. Once I had my friend from Missouri come with me and she wears Dred lock in her hair and as we approached the entrance, I was able to go in but they gave her some lame excuse as to why she could not which was basically discrimination.
I think privilege impacts ones gender, race, ethnicity, religion, ableness or sexual preferences simply by excluding a person. Pretty much all employers must post a sign of non-discrimination when it comes to hiring a person. The reality is if its a female applying to home depot or any hardware store they most likely wont get chosen simply because they are female and a hardware store usually is for men. I think this has changed over the past several years though but still exists many places. Another example is the initiation of building the Mosque near ground zero
