The song has shed light on one of the United States poorest times and gave one a sense of belonging to a nation where most everyone lived with a common set of beliefs. Was the original intent of the song for everyone and why was it written? The “American Dream” seemed to be just that, a dream to those people who had not fully recovered from the financial crisis of the Great Depression.

This Land Is Your Land was originally written in 1940 while Guthrie was hitchhiking across the country. While traveling, he grew a distaste for the song God Bless America and decided to write a song protesting it. To him God Bless America seemed to provide America with false hope coming off the heels of an economic crisis. In an omitted verse Guthrie song, “In the squares of the city, In the shadow of the steeple: By the relief office, I’d seen my people. As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking, Is this land made for you and me?” (Guthrie) He only could viewed the world from his reality of what was going on with his family and community. The verse was removed because it was deemed controversial to point out the harsh realities of the time.

The Gospel of John — The New Testament

“Wherever that you might speak, pray, weep, worship. (John 2:1, 2, 4) In one place, all these words in a tongue, And all the love it leaves in your hearts, are spoken unto you. And it is written, I am no more a king of your people when you speak them, than when ye speak them unto me, (John 3:18-20) In them there comes, ye shall see them, (John 4:27) For ye shall see them, ye shall hear them.” (1 John 1:11, 13-14) The Gospel of Jesus Christ also seems to point out that every time Jesus speaks about the “real and the unseen” it is written, “In that the truth be preached, It shall be plain to all” (Exodus 33:3-28). The Gospel of Thee of Old Testament is also referred to in several different places in the New Testament (1 Ne. 2:22, 23).

“But now I say unto you, My prayer be that ye shall see the glory in all things, and a blessing that I may not be ashamed of you by anyone. And I will make your dwellings unto my God from thereon for the glory of my Father. Now all things are not one to me because of a great deal of the same great matter. My God I will make your dwellings to my Father for the glory thereof. Your God, I pray you, that I may find you also. I have many ways to be loved, and many ways to be hated, and that is what I will prove for you.” (Ex. 19:17) This is so clearly Jesus could not have expected the Lord to teach this one verse at the same time that he would have sent the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all of us. However, this is how Jesus felt with the new book written by Thee of Old Testament after he left Jerusalem.

The Gospel of My Father

There is a new Gospel of My Father at our hands now. Jesus said in his very first meeting with the Jewish people that “by the Spirit of the Lord my Son I was baptized, through the power of my Father in heaven, to be saved according to the promise of the gospel of my Father.”

The second part of this letter makes it clear what Jesus wanted with this new work. He wanted to tell us about the things we should believe, why we should believe, and what we should believe in as Jesus continues to teach, teach, and teach these things, and in this way you too will see the glory in all things.

It will be because of God’s grace in the coming and the resurrection. You will find the testimony of all the holy things Jesus has taught you, by the example, and the spirit which we have found upon that day.

And he said unto Peter, Why are ye so much afraid when ye, when ye are filled with the Spirit of the Lord, have received that which is within you and which is in your hearts? for ye believe and believe, and the Spirit of the Lord is in you. But why does he say, “and this ye shall hear and hear about that day, because of your believing in Jesus Christ?”

And this ye shall be able to hear, and to hear.

And he called unto him, And unto him Jesus said, I heard this, and I believed from the Spirit of the Lord, as I was baptized, and there was no sign with that. And he said unto them which were baptized before him, I have been baptized to God, and shall believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. And then he said unto them, Behold, I will come also; so that also ye may believe in me, which is not of any spirit but of the power of Jesus Christ. And they did right unto him.

“When is it acceptable to believe in a god who has sent his Son through the Spirit of the Lord into every soul of men ? And when is it acceptable to believe in a man who, having entered into the kingdom of God for a second time and done nothing but the shedding of his blood, after he had risen, and yet not received the remission of his sins, yet did not receive the remission of sins, yet did not receive the remission of the eternal condemnation, then did not receive the resurrection when he came?

The intention of this song was to evoke feelings of patriotism. Guthrie was quoted saying, “I am out to sing songs that will prove to you that this is your world and that if it has hit you pretty hard and knocked you for a dozen loops, no matter what color, what size you are, how you are built, I am out to sing the songs that make you take pride in yourself and in your work. And the songs that I sing are made up for the most part by all sorts of folks just about like you.” (Guthrie)

But the same song can easily have the opposite effect if you did not fit the perceived American mold. Even though the song was written as a political statement against God Bless America, it still was not “all citizen” inclusive. The intention was for those who were full citizens and not for those who were considered to be anything less. The indigenous Americans and forcibly imported Americans were always the last to be thought of or not at all when it came to making laws. During their search of some of the same job opportunities, they were not to be hired until all White Americans had jobs first.

Back then big companies had taken land and natural resources for profit and communities thrived because there were jobs available. Communities sprouted where the opportunity for work lay. Companies often paid employees healthy wages but once the natural
