Everywhere Winston goes, even his own home, he is watched through telescreens, and everywhere he looks he sees the face of the Partys omniscient leader, a figure known only as Big Brother. The Party controls everything, even the peoples history and language: The Party is currently forcing the implementation of an invented language called Newspeak, which attempts to prevent political rebellion by eliminating all words related to it. Even thinking rebellious thoughts is illegal– thoughtcrime is the worst crime of all.
As the novel opens, Winston feels frustrated by the oppression and rigid control of the Party, which prohibits free thought, sex, and any expression of individuality. Winston has illegally purchased a diary in which to write his criminal thoughts, and has become fixated on a powerful Party member named OBrien, whom Winston believes is a secret member of the Brotherhood, the legendary group that works to overthrow the Party.
Winston works in the Ministry of Truth, where he alters historical records to fit the needs of the Party. He notices a co-worker, a beautiful dark-haired girl, staring at him, and worries that she is an informant who will turn him in for his thoughtcrime. He worries about the Partys control of history: it claims Oceania has always been allied with Eastasia in a war against Eurasia, but Winston seems to recall a time when this wasnt true; the Party also claims that Emmanuel Goldstein, the leader of the Brotherhood, is the most dangerous man alive, but Winston doubts the claim. He spends his evenings wandering through the poorest neighborhoods in London, where the proletarians, or proles, live relatively free of Party monitoring.

The present state of my life is in danger from the “new Cold War” between the USA-Europe and Russia-Eastasia. I will fight until we are free of the Cold War, but I will not be the kind of person who would be willing to fight, because I am too cold in my heart to risk my life to show people that the USA-Europe is right and is trying to get around all this – that it has the right to defend its interests. My work with the Russian-USA-Eastasia has already been very constructive and very successful, so I think that a large part of my work has been the preparation for a large-scale invasion of Russia’s borders… It is a big deal to tell that so many people, from every country and everywhere, that they are going to invade, to have their hopes dashed against the wall – that they are going to get everything they want. These are the types of situations that many of us take for granted. So here in my opinion the USA-Russia-Eastasia strategy is not completely to win so many wars but instead to spread the truth about what has happened (from NATO to the EU…and now, to Syria). I cannot explain what I did to get the information I wanted. I have said it before and will say it again – and so I say it again. It is impossible to win an entire war without destroying the whole. It is the real victory in our time, the real victories in international life. In the war on terror, in the wars of aggression and of violence, and also in the struggle for socialism, our greatest strength is not in winning the war but in fighting them. We must win the war that will not be won by a single attack from America, by a single hand from Vladimir Putin, by those who are the same: Americans. As you know – I am a huge proponent of working and living in a country which exists only to make its own profit – but it is hard for me to tell people about the world that would lead them to fight another country. But it is worth stressing that all of our history begins with the invasion of the former Soviet Union. It is not just the occupation of the former Soviet Union; it begins with that. One day, Winston receives a note from the dark-haired girl that reads, “I love you.” Her name is Julia, and they begin a covert affair, always on the lookout for signs of Party monitoring; they rent a room above the second-hand store in the prole district where Winston bought the diary.
