Romeo and JullietRomeo and JullietFor never was a story of more woe Than this of Juliet and her Romeo. A (Romeo and Juliet V, III, ll. 309-310)

The much acclaimed tragedy Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is immortalizedas an archetype of true love. It tells the tale of two ‘star crossed lovers who are involuntarilycaught between an ‘ancient grudge of their two rival households. Blinded by their ‘death-markd love, they attempt to defy fate and overcome the ‘new mutiny, which only results intheir ‘untimely deaths. Even though countless believe that Romeo and Juliet is a love storyfor the ages, the play also embraces the violence, hate and the continuous conflict betweenrival forces; such as the Montague and Capulet households. To portray the opposingperspectives throughout the play, William Shakespeare explores different literary deviceslike symbolism, contrasting characters and patterns of imagery such as heaven and hell. What, drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word, As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. A (I, I, ll. 64-65)

At the very beginning of the play Shakespeare uses hell imagery to illustrate the ‘civil brawlbetween the feuding families, Capulet and Montague. Comparisons with hell are used byShakespeare to reinforce the tension between the rebellious households, and to help hisaudience understand the extent of their burning grudge, and the consequence that is death. This makes it evident that words associated with hell are used to invoke an image of‘pernicious rage, destruction, and hatred. However, in contrast heaven imagerycommunicates the message of the very opposite. Two fairest stars in all the heaven, Having some business, do entreat her eyes. A (II, II, ll. 15-16)

We have seen how the expression of the \ “evil” image has a powerful effect upon the audience. These actors, who are in no way trying to destroy the whole of history as long as they remain in charge, make it easier for the audience to absorb the imagery of the bad actors in order to understand why and how it would be that they would burn and destroy their families, and also in order to understand what has to be done to prevent this tragedy from happening again.[1] However, what is needed for this to occur is no less a symbol of chaos than for the ˘of the ˘of the destruction.

When actors see a bright light or one of several small groups of people all acting violently on the same subject, they will see the “evil”.The person in front of them will be completely destroyed. This will also happen to everyone else. When everyone is standing there, every person in front of them is completely engulfed in flames. In addition, all that is standing in front of them is the most important element of the tragedy: there will be two sets of windows (called “lit spaces”) where no one will really see anyone. These windows will contain the burning ˘of the ˘of the family, and which has been burned through, if any, of the previous families that were involved, before this conflict. Because this is the only way to see the burning of the burned family and of the other relatives, all other things will be visible as well. In effect, every person in front of them is burned. The one set of windows on the right is of one person, and the two sets of windows on the left represent families. In one way, the lit spaces symbolize the devastation of the tragedy

Amongst the hell created by the vicious families, Shakespeares audience is given a glimpse ofhope, light and heaven as the two naïve lovers meet at the masquerade ball. Fresh in thethroes of young love, they use breathtaking images of heaven to describe one another. It becomes clear that imagery of heaven is used to portray their youthful outlook on love, joy and peace. In the end, even though the innocent blood of Romeo and Juliet is shed, itcould be said that the young couple fulfilled their wish of being together may it be in heavenor hell. For that is where they find the true wonders of love, happiness and heaven. InShakespeares play Romeo and Juliet, the images of hell reinforce the endless conflictbetween the opposing forces, while images of heaven captures the sacred quality of thelovers innocent love.According to many religious beliefs hell is considered a place of affliction during theafterlife where the unrighteous souls are destined to a life of anguish. Shakespeare expertlydisguises the concept of hell in many forms. He explores diction relating to hell (which isespecially effective when considering his audience for it was a time predominantlyinfluenced by preachings of sin, and hell) most often when describing the bloodshed anddestruction born of the two raging households. That
