William Shakespeare was well known for being a stealthy writer
who knew how to express controversial issues that were happening during his time.
In the play The Merchant of Venice Shakespeare contains many examples of anti-
semitism that insults Jews.Antisemitism is prejudice against a religion or ethnic
group. For example the expulsion of all the Jews that lived in London during the
time that King Edward the first ruled England which was in 1290.
In modern times we considered many parts of the play very offensive
towards the Jewish community but during the Elizabethans era this was actually
comical. When Shakespeare wrote this play during a time were most of the London
residents were antisemitic. In The Merchant of Venice there is plenty of example of
Shakespeare supporting anti-semitism.
“Certainly the Jew is the very devil incarnation”
—-Launcelot (Act 2 Scene 2 Line 24)
This line come from Launcelot who works for Shylock the Jew.When
he says this line he is debating if he should run away or be ruled by a Jew , he eventually
runs away.
