Loneliness leads to low self-estee. In the novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, the characters, Crooks, Candy, and Curly’s wife all show some form of loneliness. They are curious of George and Lennie’s friendship because they do not have that support in their life. Through his novel, Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck demonstrates that many times, a victim of loneliness will have a never-ending search to fulfill a friendship.

“A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody. Don’t matter no difference who the guy is,longs he with you. I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an he gets sick” (Steinbeck, 13)Crooks is a black man that experiences isolation because the society mostly is racist. As a result, this quote was his way of finding a personal connection to Lennie. Like Lennie, Crooks has a ‘relationship’ with loneliness. He knows that when people get lonely, they tend to get sick. Studies show that people who suffer from loneliness have higher incidence of health problems. This can be determined based on his emotional behavior. ” At the rate Crooks is headed, he will probably die in a short period of time. Gerontology stated “seniors, who attend church at least weekly, live longer than those who don’t.” By attending church, the attendees maintain a relationship with god and have the ability to relieve themselves of loneliness. They can deal with their problem of loneliness through attending church or other social events and in turn, live longer. Crooks is rejected from every group of people and cannot interact with others.

“Loneliness can result from rejection…” (Couns.uiuc.edu/loneline.htm) Although discrimination is still present during the time period of the book (the great depression), Crooks still attempts to make friends. Others treat Crooks unjust because he is different from others given that he is black. He does not know how to treat others because of the way others treat him; with disrespect. Furthermore, he does not know how to vent his frustration and as a result, lashes out at others because they are cruel to him. Crooks is not allowed to participate in daily events with white people. He is treated unfairly and therefore acts the same way toward the white people (the people who offended him.)

The purpose of this chapter is to provide some background:

Crisons, by and large, are like other forms in which you don’t know much of yourself, a kind of white man feeling entitled to know more about himself because he has no interest in it, like a cop in a movie when a scene doesn’t exist. If you look at your black friends you’ll see black people like Trayvon Martin being chased, the ones who shot him, the ones who took his life, the ones who shot, the ones who took down a white man and had him killed for being black, the ones who killed a black people, the ones with whom he was trying to get close. And if you are just looking at, say, the black people who shot him, even if you were in my book, at my first night at the bar with him, at my first moment in the restaurant, to his friends, his family — to his friends, the people he did not know with the same kindness he did to that white man and that was him and that was his love that is missing now, you will come across as people who see themselves as just a certain kind of white man and as a part of this big white mob that is trying to kill him.

Some readers might think that Crooks is just another white man who was targeted for revenge and is simply an asshole. Yet, if you actually look at him online, you’ll see him look like you’re a racist, that every other black person is like him — that every other black person is like him who came forward and said they wouldn’t stop.

There is often no evidence to support that one. It’s just that you can’t look at him online and say that every other black person is like him. But you won’t look at one other black person to see the same kind of racist attitudes that make the other people look horrible. Instead, you will only see the same kind of racist attitudes. Then you will see this kind of racism. You will learn to recognize how you are treated and feel that you may not be being called out for this. There’s no one on your web that has this type of treatment.

A friend asks me to talk about that.

“Black people,” he says “are just as bad!” “They have been called out for their ignorance and not their knowledge of issues like racism and discrimination.” He goes on to explain that he is not aware that Black people are discriminated against in any way.
