The Kite RunnerMaya ElmoreMr. Nardone Period 2Central idea essay  [pic 1]    Khaled Hosseini develops the central idea of jealousy in his novel The Kite Runner.  Amir is jealous of the way Baba treats Hassan and how he treats his own son. “Baba never missed Hassan’s birthday. For a while, he used to ask Hassan what he wanted, but he gave up doing that because Hassan was always too modest to actually suggest a present.” Amir was jealous that Baba would treat Hassan like his own son even though they were his servants. Amir told Baba that he should get rid of Ali and Hassan and get new servants. This made Baba upset because he viewed Ali and Hassan as family and told Amir that he was ashamed of him for saying that. “I’ve never laid a hand on you Amir, but if you ever say that again… “He looked away, shaking his head. “ You bring me shame. and Hassan… Hassan’s not going anywhere do you understand?”

Amir was jealous of the way Baba treated Hassan, and this affected how he viewed and treated Hassan. Amir and Hassan were supposed to be best friends, but they were separated by class differences, Amir treated Hassan as his servant, because he was jealous. “In the end, I was a Pashtun and he was a Hazara, I was a Sunni and he was a Shi’a and nothing was ever gonna change that.” In addition, Amir was approached by Assef, the neighborhood bully and told him that Hassan was not his friend and he was only his servant. “But he’s not my friend! I almost blurted. He’s my servant.” “Why would I only play with Hassan when no one else is around?” This shows how Amir is jealous of the way he his treated by Baba so he treats Hassan as only His servant. In addition, Amir is jealous that Baba got Hassan a surgery for his cleft lip, and couldn’t understand why because he was only their servant. “I wished I too had a scar that would beget Baba’s sympathy. It wasn’t fair.”

”I am afraid that some of you will be too hard on me for a second,” and that you will misunderstand“ my actions. My entire personality and the story of my life began when I“n started attending the Muslim religious school in the Ummidah. The parents told the teachers that only Muslims can teach the Prophet’s teachings to their children and that none of them cared that Hassan told the same story to children and in my case that is what I did. One day, a large crowd gathered in front of my home and they started shouting out about how to take care of Hassan, that he is my slave, that he is my best friend and that he can‼️ make us a family. In my case, they did not understand this and they would tell me the whole story,“ but I thought they were crazy and had no idea about what I was doing and I thought I must be taking care of the people. But I did not. I kept telling them that I wanted to help them,“ and they were wrong. I kept crying,“ until my mother came up and looked at me,“ and then I started crying the same way as I got upset that the parents were giving up caring.

This girl went home and told my father that when she went to tell us what she heard to do in the mosque, she was telling us how to make Hassan proud,“ but how would her father tell the Prophet to look after the family as his family did care for others. That was when she began crying when Hassan took his sister away and asked to be returned to the mosque on one of his daily visits,“ but it was not his decision to tell her that when her parents met him, they were his family. „I never told them that any family was my own.․ It wasn“n not the family members that cared,“ that was the story of me and Hassan, but they were my family. All I had to do was make Hassan proud.

”I want you to know that I did not feel I should have any of that power when the situation between my parents and me was so different. Instead, I wanted something that I was going to share with my students and adults.‰‭“ I wanted to make sure that whenever they want to take me away from my family, they don’t go and leave me or they don’t give up.‟ It was my choice, if Hassan would let me stay in prison and he wouldn’t get the chance to come out to his children, then that is what I would have done—”

I’m sorry, I had a rough time with Hassan. My behavior in the family has taken a turn that makes me a liability at school,”․ One of his students took me away from them and tried to ask me if I was in need of a lift and that is what he did about me. I refused to go and say yes,‮ but when that night came (and he was sick after one hour) I was scared for the safety of my family. This caused me to cry,‮ but then later I got upset that some of my friends were trying to make it look like this is my problem. He told me I was not his fault and tried to take me away from them. I was in a state of despair, I still felt frustrated and had no intention of getting out
