Wal-Mart vs. Target
Shopping is an integral part of our everyday lives. Every person, in some way or another, must shop at some point. There are many places out there at which you can choose to shop. Two of the leading and most important companies out there today are Wal-Mart and Target. Each company has many positive and negative characteristics about them. But if you are to compare them based on these characteristics, you would find that Target has a better chance of success in the future then Wal-Mart does.

First of all, Targets stores have a much cleaner look to them then Wal-Marts do. Targets shelves are much neater, with fewer items on them and less clutter. The items are lined up in a straighter sense also. Target stores also have much more space. Sure, the store may be smaller then most Wal-Marts, but you still seem to have more space. Wal-Marts shelves are crunched full of items and they usually are always in disarray. The tile and carpet in Target are always clean and look almost as if they are brand new. Wal-Mart floors have scuffmarks and appear like they are barely ever cleaned. Wal-Mart isles are packed and there seems to be little or no space. People would rather shop at a store that is clean and is better taken care of then at a store that comes across as if it was disaster zone. Target has more open space and the lack of clutter makes the atmosphere and the shopping experience much more enjoyable. Shopping at a store with a more enjoyable atmosphere is very important.

Targets employees have a nicer appearance then of those at Wal-Mart. Target employees have to wear some type of a nice red shirt, such as a collared shirt. They also are required to wear khakis. Target employees seem to be more friendly then that of their Wal-Mart counterparts. Wal-Mart employees only wear a blue vest, and whatever type of pants they want. The Target employees have a business like appearance, while those at Wal-Mart look like they just rolled out of bed and put on whatever clothes were next to them.

Target has a better selection of discretionary items also. While Wal-Mart sells everything from beer to tires, Target has more selections of electronics, sporting goods, and apparels. About 45 percent of Targets merchandise consists of these discretionary items. Discretionary items for Wal-Mart only make up about 30 percent of their merchandise. Target also has a better selection of designers making their items. Target sports more hip designers such as Michael Graves and the clothing brand Mossimo. Wal-Mart carries lower end merchandise such as Puritan. Although Wal-Mart may provide you with many choices of merchandise over many different fields, Target gives you more quality in the field of discretionary items. Targets merchandise in the clothing field is much more trendy then that of the less popular brands of Wal-Mart.

Target also has a greater chance for growth. Target averaged about 5.1
