There are several main advantages to VOIP service. The first one to discuss is the overall lower cost. VOIP has several things going for it to help reduce cost primarily that it uses a single network to carry both voice and data. With all the advantages that VOIP technology provides there are also disadvantages to consider when implementing a VOIP communications system. The primary thing to consider is reliability. Most existing telephone networks are powered by the telephone company using power from a central office/exchange, so that as long as you have a phone that doesnt require power (cordless phones) you are still able to place calls; this includes when the power is out at your home. With VOIP technology it relies upon a connection to the internet. In the event of a power outage or an internet network outage, you would be without a phone. This could potentially be very critical if an emergency were to arise. Also with the ability for a telephone call to be generated from any internet connection, emergency personnel could take much longer to find the origin of a caller.
