With all the advantages that VOIP technology provides there are also disadvantages to consider when implementing a VOIP communications system. The primary thing to consider is reliability. Most existing telephone networks are powered by the telephone company using power from a central office/exchange, so that as long as you have a phone that doesnt require power (cordless phones) you are still able to place calls; this includes when the power is out at your home. With VOIP technology it relies upon a connection to the internet. In the event of a power outage or an internet network outage, you would be without a phone. This could potentially be very critical if an emergency were to arise. Also with the ability for a telephone call to be generated from any internet connection, emergency personnel could take much longer to find the origin of a caller.
