Frankenstein essay:
Intro: Some characters in the novel “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley, benefit from isolation, while other characters finds its effects destructive. Isolation has been a key theme that has been expressed all throughout the book, in which the characters approach isolation in different ways. This loss of connection is a very emotional twist and that may cause the characters to suffer or thrive in their life. Specific characters where this theme has occurred are Clerval, Victor, and Victors creation; the monster. Clerval travels to Victors college to take up the occupation of studying oriental languages. He becomes educated in Persian, Arabic and Sankrit, learning about the history of Rome and Greece. He is able to lift Victors spirits after introducing this to him and therefore, isolation had benefitted them. Victor loses his connection after he becomes so involved with his creation, that he forgets the importance of family and friends. The monsters appearance forces people to run away from him in fear and he isnt able to create any connections with the community.

Body: Upon Clervals arrival to the University in Ingolstagdt, he is able to educate himself in the study of oriental languages, Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit and is able to guide Victors mindset into a more positive direction. He finds that this should lead himself into the path to be successful in life and believes that this will help him understand the world. “Clerval had never sympathized in my tastes of natural science, and his literary pursuits differed wholly from those which had occupied me. (55) Although Victor and Clerval have different interests, Clerval is able to help Victor realize the beauty of Greece and Rome with the readings and writings. His mind was turned around and he was back to his original self. His health and spirits had been restored and Clerval brought back the better feelings in his heart, teaching him to love the aspects of nature.

Victor travels to Ingolstagdt for college, to persue his studies. His professors dont agree with the philosophers of his interest and encourage him to take on philosophy and physiology. He becomes very interested and Victor chooses to isolate himself from the rest of the world in his obsession to reanimate life from dead, after his mothers death. “Winter, spring, and summer passed away during my labours; but I did not watch the blossom or the expanding leaves– sights which before always yielded me supreme delight– so deeply was I engrossed in my occupation.” (42) Victor begins to lose contact with the outside world and this ultimately affects his relationships with friends and family back in Geneva. The monster creates an emotional struggle for victor, trying to cope with his creation. He develops nervous fever and becomes trapped with his thoughts. Now victor has nobody to soothe him, making him realize how much of an impact his relatives have had on him.
