Victor Frankenstein is the main character in the novel Frankenstein. He was a young boy who grew up in Geneva. He loved to read books of ancient scientists while he was at the university of Ingolstadt. There only a few years, he learned about science and he became very smart. He wanted to know all there was to know, but through the course of the novel Victor makes 3 mistakes that eventually lead to his death.

His first mistake was his decision to bring a terrifyingly ugly monster to life with much surprise to himself. He spent several years trying to bring it to life and then Victor spends the rest of his life regretting it. We find out that the creature is alive when Victor says, “when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs.(40)” He doesn’t want anyone to know what he has done even though he knows that keeping the monster is not good. The monster ends up killing Victor’s wife, best friend, and his youngest brother. The monster also accidentally kills Victor’s father and 2 other people. Victor is so upset because he feels guilty, responsible and unsure of what to do

Victor’s second mistake was running away after the monster comes to life. As soon as the monster comes to life, Victor is filled with intense revulsion. He explains, “the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart.(41)” He is so surprised that it actually happened that he didn’t take time to think about what to do. He doesn’t take care of the creature and he just wishes he had never created it. Victor thinks about creating another creature but then remembers what a bad idea it was to make one in the first place. So he just doesn’t create it at all. This is one of the reasons that the monster becomes so angry with Victor and seeks revenge.

Victor’s third mistake was completely cutting himself off from society. After the creature comes to life Victor runs away, and once he comes back the creature has killed his younger brother. When his family goes on vacation he comes in contact with the creature for the first time. All the creature wanted was to be loved by Victor. Victor eventually forces the monster to leave and then tells Robert Walton everything that happened. Walton was the first person
