Canadas Multicultaralism
Canada, founded in 1867 by the Fathers of Confederation is home to 30 million
people. Since, the first pioneers colonized Canada, diversity has been its strongest
attribute. Various treaties were signed to acknowledge multiculturalism and equality. In
the year 2004, it was recorded that 200,000 immigrants inhibit Canada. It is clear that this
democratic land prides itself in the diversity and uniqueness that every citizen has to
offer. However, one may question if Canada has a distinct culture. In order to develop
an opinion, it is necessary to analyze society, linguistics and identities. Upon doing so, it
becomes obvious that Canada’s culture is multicultural. It is not one distinct culture but
one array of diversity.
“As fact, “multiculturalism” in Canada refers to the presence and persistence of
diverse racial and ethnic minorities who define themselves as different and who wish to
remain so. Ideologically, multiculturalism consists of a relatively coherent set of ideas
and ideals pertaining to the celebration of Canada’s cultural mosaic. It is the process by
which racial and ethnic minorities compete with central authorities for achievement of
certain goals and aspirations.(Leman 9)” Multiculturalism plays a crucial and evident
role in society. Over many centuries, society has evolved and changed due to the rapid
growing diversity among citizens. There is an advantage to having a multicultural
society in the national, international and business perspectives. As the Right Honourable
Jean Chretien mentioned in his national speech, “”Canada has become a post-national,
multicultural society. It contains the globe within its borders, and Canadians have
learned that their two international languages and their diversity are a comparative
advantage and a source of continuing creativity and innovation. Canadians are, by
virtue of history and necessity, open to the world.” It is clearly evident that
multiculturalism within Canadian society has strengthened our position in the world.
Nationally, multiculturalism is an asset to Canada. Various cultures and diverse
customs allow a positive influence among people, their values and outlook on life.
The Act for the Preservation and Enhancement of Multiculturalism in Canada
was passed in 1988 to ensure that Multiculturalism enriches our civilization in
the sense that it teaches and enforces acceptance and respect among citizens. These
positive influences among the people continues to create hope for a brighter tomorrow
free of racism or discrimination. Our values are influenced by the multicultural society
which we live in. One may find, that we are less ignorant regarding different cultures.
We have become accustomed to diversity because we accept uniqueness. The
fact that Canada is a multicultural nation gives it an advantage in the international
aspect. Since Canadians are intolerant to racism and racial prejudice, we have become
excellent peacekeepers. Canada prides itself for being a positive role model. Canadians
are caring and eager to help. These services have landed Canada an excellent reputation.
Canadian peacekeepers are often asked to help bring peace in several countries.
Multiculturalism is helping Canadian societies assist on an international level.
