The Use of Wireless and Mobile Devices
The use of Wireless and Mobile Devices
Many medical organizations and users have found that wireless communications and devices are convenient, easy to use and flexible. Many users have their own laptop computers that connect to a wireless local area network (WLAN) that provides the flexibility to move around. With this wireless network system, it allows users to share data, applications and any compatible devices without having to be physically connected to a printer cables or any other peripheral devices. Users that use mobile devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) can synchronize data between PDAs, personal computers and can use network services such as web browsing, internet access and emails. The benefits of having a wireless communications, is that it cuts the cost of wiring costs.

Risk of using Wireless and Mobile Devices
Now the risk that is inherent in wireless technologies are security, availability, quality of service, co-existence, electromagnetic interference and privacy. The use of a wireless network has the same risks as wired networks. Wireless networks transmit data through radio frequencies, unless protected, they are open to intruders. Intruders will gain access to the system by stealing or destroying data. Intruders will also launch attacks to tie up the network and deny service to authorized users.

Another risk is the theft of portable devices. Intruders can gain access to information systems by bypassing the firewall protection.
“Once they have accessed systems, intruders can launch denial of service attacks, steal identities, violate the privacy of legitimate users, insert viruses or malicious code, and disable operations. Sensitive information that is transmitted between two wireless devices can be intercepted and disclosed if not protected by strong encryption. Handheld devices, which are easily stolen, can reveal sensitive information.” (Radack)

Mobile devices are also at risk for viruses and can be a major threat. Viruses can take advantage of security holes in applications or in the operating system that causes damage to applications to a mobile device. E-mail viruses can affect PDAs in the same way as regular email viruses affect PCs. Spam causes disruption and can drive the costs up when its targeted towards wireless devices.
