Missing Chapter – the Bloody Underwear
Candy LiuMr. 20th October 2017Missing Chapter Rationale        The missing chapter fits at the end of chapter 12 and the beginning of chapter 13 perfectly, where her mother and Bailey found out her bloody underwear and slowly figured that fact that Maya was being raped.         The chapter serves an explanation of how naïve a young black girl who was growing up in a community that is full of white people. The message that the chapter is that it’s extremely important for Maya to have her parents around her while she was growing up in order to support her with the knowledge that the school won’t teach but she must know before she can survive in the cruel society.         In order to express the theme, languages were manipulated in order to emphasis Maya Angelou’s writing style, reveal Maya’s characteristics as well as the significant roles that parents play in the growth of young black girls. Devices, such as diction/allusion, use of languages, and simile. Maya uses a lot of allusions in her writing and the one that appears in the missing chapter is called literature allusion, which it links to quotes from William Shakespeare, one of Maya’s most favorite white author, as well as the Bible to reveal her insecurity and self-conscious of herself. Since Maya Angelou is an African-American, her writing style is different from the fictions that people usually read. By imitating her writing style, the languages of the chapter changed into African-American English. Instead of using “being going to”, “gon” is the word which people use when they are writing in African-American’s style. Lastly, simile also plays a significant role not only in this chapter, but in the entire book. By using simile when describing a scene, it can make a scene seems more realistic by comparing unfamiliar things to common things that everyone in the world should know.  [303 words]                 Missing Chapter: The Bloody Underwear        “To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man” (A-Z Quotes), one of William Shakespeare’s most famous quotes about self-respect. I couldn’t remember what exactly happened the day after I got raped in the first place, because it is just a nightmare for me, I wouldn’t want to memorize it…… The bloody underwear fell on mother’s feet, just looks like a big black dot on an extremely white wall. The room suddenly fell into silence, I could even hear everyone’s breathing.  I could not stare at mother’s eyes. My head suddenly moved downward, and my eyes were looking at my belly button. I was trying to pretend nothing happened and also put on a pitiful look. Nevertheless, I could see there were tears which slowly coming out of mother’s eyes through my canthus. Everything gradually began to appear in my head, and everything was happening as slow as the speed of the turtle. However, I could nearly remember everything, every moment happened from the appearance of the bloody underwear until we were hurrying to the hospital. “What is it? Why is your underwear full of blood? What happened?” Bailey asked with the mask of confusion. He totally had no idea what was going on with my bloody underwear, and when he saw tears coming out from mother’s eyes, he started crying as well with bewilderment because he had no clue about what just happened to both me and Mother Dear. After crying with desperation, mother turned around and look at me with sympathy, pitiful, and regretful. She was trying to control her emotions and tears, but tears still came along her face and she looked like as if she was the person who got raped. She came in front of me, kneeled down with one knee and said, “Ritie, I ain’t gonna blame you, beat you nor scold you. Just go and get a quick shower and then we should gon to the hospital as soon as possible.Once mother was gone to pack, Bailey came along and sat beside me on the bed, entreating me for telling the truth and what had happened in the past few hours. He asked in a smooth and quiet tone which I had never hear this before, and I started to panic. Should I tell him or not? How could I tell him? What would he think of me after knowing the truth? Would he leave me? Would he get killed by Mr. Freeman after I promised him that I would not tell anyone about the incident? I could not live without Bailey! He is the most important person in my life! There wasn’t any simple for me to tell Bailey while explaining my hesitation without mentioning my oath to Mr. Freeman.
