Doc was born and raised in Fayette, competed on Upper Iowa University teams when he was still in high school, and received his B.S. degree in 1900.

Doc Dormans athletic career was only momentarily interrupted at the start of his professional life.
He became legendary in Iowa sports through the first half of the century, serving as the football coach at Upper Iowa University in Fayette for 50 consecutive years from 1910 to 1960. Doc Dorman was associated with Upper Iowa athletics as a player and coach for 63 years. He was still the schools baseball coach at the time of his death early in 1963, when he was 84.
By 1906 he had become an unpaid coach at Upper Iowa, and in the next few years he spent so much of his spare time on campus directing various athletic teams that the college president proposed a $200 salary for him in 1910 to coach both football and basketball.
Dr. Dormans 50-year football coaching record was 154 victories, 135 losses and 18 ties. His teams won or shared six Iowa Conference championships. He had 1 outright championship and 5 ties.
