It is commonly thought that the intention of dropping the bombs, Little Boy and Fat Man, were intended to strictly end war with Japan. However they were actually detonated to intimidate the Soviet Union. The bombing on Japan allowed them to inevitably accept their unconditional surrender, also known as the Potsdam agreement. The Potsdam agreement was the military agreement between the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics who were in a tripartite plan to reconstruct Germany. The Japanese military strength estimated to about 5,000,000 men. Their men were spread over many countries which caused their allies trade to be deteriorated down to almost nothing (Doc A).The United States military objective during the summer prior, 1945, was to prepare for the complete surrender of Japan. The strategic plans of the United States armed forces was prepared without reliance on the atomic bomb, due to the reason that it had not yet been tested in New Mexico (Doc A). The surrender of Japan was not the only result of the two atomic bombs. The United States hit about 60 cities with High Explosive bombs (Doc B). Japan was clearly heading to its end. Russia was quickly intimidated and allies ignored helping Japan because of the dropping of the bombs.
