Contain China
Introduction:Good afternoon class my name is Jackie and this is my partner Anyel. Today we will be discussing why the United States should contain China.         Now, The Containment Policy of the United States refers to the prevention of China spreading their ideology and influences among other countries.Containment was suggested by diplomat George Kennan who eagerly suggested the United States repress communist influence in Eastern Europe and Asia. One of the ways to accomplish this was by establishing NATO so the Western European nations had a defense against communist influence. After Vietnam and détente, President Jimmy Carter focused less on containment and more on fighting the Cold War by promoting human rights in hot spot countries. My partner and I want to be able to emphasize reasons why the United States should contain China. In our debate we will be discussing how China is gradually upraising in power.I will begin by discussing the AIIB (Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank) BANKThe AIIB (Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank)                According to an article “ A New U.S Grand Strategy towards China” published on the nationalinterest.org on April 13, 2015.        “ The recent Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) debacle led to understanding how China’s ascent is aimed at challenging American global reach”. It is poised to undermine the influence of the United States-led World Bank and International Monetary Fund while institutionalizing Chinas geo-economic persuasion in the Asia-Pacific. Already Italy, France, Britain, Germany, South Korea, Denmark, and Australia have signed on as members of the AIIB, with Thailand and Taiwan coming close to an entry as well. The United States remains on the outside looking in as its influence is directly challenged by China’s rise. The purpose of the multilateral development bank is to provide finance to infrastructure projects in the Asia region. According to the former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, the AIIB’s establishment “may be remembered as the moment the United States lost its role as the underwriter of the global economic system”. The AIIB is a critical element of China’s “one belt, one road” strategy, which encompasses two initiatives: The overland Silk Road Economic Belt, connecting China to Europe, and the Silk Road that I will be discussing later on, that will link China to Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe. The AIIB is a chance to increase China’s “Soft Power”
