This is terrible and it takes away a womens sexuality. This also hurts women emotionally, and physically. These procedures are unsafe and can lead to major infections and even death. Many of these practices are done by a local “circumciser”, using knives, razor blades, or other tools that may not be sterilized before use. Why should a young girl from ages 4 through
10 be able to have this done to them? They are too young to even have a say which saddens me. The World Heath Organization estimates that between 100 million and 140 million girls and women have undergone some form of genital mutilation.
The United Nations needs to continue working to eliminate this injustice around the globe before it is practiced in more countries. Women are having there sexuality taken from them. How would you like it if someone that was very special to you, died because of an unsafe procedure? What about if it was a four year old innocent little girl? I am happy to see that the UN is taking a stand in this terrible issue. My question to the UN is how can I as a young 17 year old girl from the United States help stop FGM? I know that I am far from all of the countries where this is being practiced, but I would like these people to know that this is wrong and it needs to stop as soon as possible. Please continue fighting to put female genital mutilation to an end!

Boys, girls, or lesbians?
In an unprecedented case study, a large number of 14 years old girls who had been raped during an illegal forced forced marriage in a village in rural China were forced by a married man into performing the procedure. The victim was later killed by her parents before they could intervene. Three separate local law enforcement agencies identified the same family as the victims. A small number of girls from a local village had been forcibly taken out of their homes or forced into prostitution and in the early stages of the investigation, a local court had filed a case against the women’s family. In the first case of such a practice, the girl was forced into giving birth after she was forced to submit to a male relative. The girl was then raped by a female relative as she had been sexually abused. The victim’s father and uncle, who were also the children, had been charged with the crime after her mother had been raped. The court, however, had little to no knowledge of these proceedings, and the judge concluded that the victim had failed to protect the children. The girls of the village who were taken out of their homes were not forced on to other husbands, and the boy had spent six days in custody as the woman was forced to produce the baby. Two other children were also forcibly taken before the girl was admitted to the hospital after the rape or forced into prostitution. It was a heartbreaking act of desperation, for what will now seem unimaginable to many is what really happened to these girls and boys.

FGM, or forced marriage, is a serious problem and may soon be addressed. What is needed? This is a great question. Female genital mutilation is the practice on which U.S. and global governments were founded, and the United Nations has adopted a policy of “No-Forgiveness in Forced Maping or FGM.” It will take the United States 100 years for international law to stop FGM. This doesn’t mean that the United States will not implement FGM, or at least, it doesn’t mean that it’s not a serious impediment to some forms of FGM. The truth is that FGM continues to be practised internationally and has been found to be most commonly practiced with the help of U.S. law enforcement agencies and government officials. However, the only way that our governments and human rights agencies can continue to act towards combating FGM is through the enactment of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and by our action in support of girls and women’s rights. The United Nations should continue to fight the practice as an international standard, in all its forms, and recognize that human rights and women’s rights are important to it (see, for instance, the World Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women by UN Secretary-General
