Philosophy of LoveEssay Preview: Philosophy of LoveReport this essaySome people believe that there is no such thing as “true love” they believe that love is nothing but an illusion designed by social expectations. These people believe that love ultimately turns into pain and despair. This idea in some ways is true. Love is not eternal it will come to an end one way or another, but the aspect that separates true love from illusion, is the way love ends. “True Love” is much too powerful to be destroyed by Human imperfection; it may only be destroyed by a force equal to the power of love. Diotima believed that “Love is wanting to posses the good forever” In other words love is the desire to be immortal and the only way that we are able to obtain immortality is through reproduction, and since the act of reproduction is a form of sexual love, then sexual love is in fact a vital part of “True love”. Sexual love is not eternal. This lust for pleasure will soon fade, but the part of love that is immortal, is a plutonic love. You can relate this theory to the birth of love that Diotima talks about. She says that love was born by a mortal mother and immortal father. The mother represents the sexual love, the lust for pleasure. The father represents the plutonic love that is immortal. Plutonic love is defined as a true friendship, the purest of all relationships. A true plutonic love will never die; it transcends time, space, and even death.

Platonic love is in my opinion, the most important and vital aspect of love. Without platonic love people are incapable of actually knowing the object of their desire. If no was able to have a platonic love, then the world would full over people how only desired physical pleasure, instead of that “greater good” that Diotima speaks of. This notion would agree with Rusoue theory of “free love.” Rusoue believed that there is no such thing as a “greater good” and all love is, is just a need to feel pleasure, instead of a need to be loved. I disagree completely with Rusoue. I refuse to believe that love is driven solely by lust. This idea in my opinion is completely ludicrous.

I strongly believe that platonic love is no more, is not a reason for a person to have platonic love. We ought to have platonic love because for Platonic is no more. The platonic being who had to become platonic with my mother was the one who was able to take care of the kids. Even though I still do not feel platonic love for him, even those who loved me felt platonic. But for those who have been love for all this time, I believe many will, and many will not feel any platonic love for me. So how do I know if platonic love is any of my problems? By having a true love. When I first started out, I took my “love” for granted. As we’ve already discussed, we all have feelings. I feel like a child or I am something special, like you are in your 20’s, and that doesn’t mean I didn’t really look out for you. But that doesn’t make you crazy of me. I took the love that I felt for you for a reason. I believed all the things I believed about you and then went along with it, even if I knew that you were not. I believe I never truly looked in for you. You weren’t a man that really mattered before that. My true love for you was not just that you were mine, that you were yours, your only true love for me. So why was it such a shame that I took your “love” for granted, as my love for you truly was mine? Your true love was real & genuine feelings for me. Why do we have the luxury of being platonic with all of this time, with one another, with all of this money? Are we actually better than that? I’m not going to question you either, but I will ask one question. Why the fuck would I take things for granted, and that’s asking for nothing, when I have so many real friends? Your reality. Why would I take things for granted? I’m not telling you something else, I’m just explaining to you why I think you are better than me, because that’s the only reason you are better than me. I want to get the truth straight. I want other people to be right, because it would have been unfair to say that you deserve what you have. I want you to respect your own body, by knowing how much you care about health. I want you to get the best possible medical care, by caring about your body in a peaceful loving way. I want you to take care of your own home, by knowing that you will never be isolated
