Translation InfoboxThe Berlin Wall        From 1949 to 1990 the Berlin wall was in the middle of the DDR.  By 1961, 1.6 million East Germans fled from West Berlin to the BRD.  To close this last escape route, the DDG built the wall in 1961.  The part of the wall, which went through the middle of Berlin, was 43 km long.  The remaining 112 km separated West Berlin from the DDR.        The wall simply began as a barrier of barbed wire.  It was soon replaced by a wall of concrete blocks and continued to expand.  In the year 1975, there was already a wall that was much more than a wall.  They therefore called it the “death strip”.  In the wall between East and West over 60 people lost their lives.        The graph shows why only a few East Germans were able to flee to the BRD. On the wall there was a firing order.  The wall police had to shoot anyone who tried to escape through the wall.  Most people paid with their lives.
