Then the bride and the groom are lead into a room where they enter and change from the clothes they were wearing to a uniformed lace material and with gold jewelries, which signifies that they are no more single and they are now joined together as husband and wife. Then the celebration begins with music, dancing and the elders of the village begin to shoot guns in the air as a sign of a ceremony that is well fulfilled. Food is served and the newly married couples are expected to eat from one place.

In Nigeria, the traditional marriage event must take place before the church wedding. Nigerians have their style and art of performance, which states that one has to meet up with the traditional law and requirements before any other law. Regarding marriages, a traditional marriage must be performed first, before the church wedding. And if this is not done properly, the couples will not be recognized as married couples.

The Nigerian marriage is in the same contest as the new yam festival which is celebrated as the first yam growth in the community. Villages gather at the market square to present to the Igwe (king) of the village, their first harvest. He blesses the yams and gives authorization for the masquerades to the released from their tents so that they can dance and perform for the Igwe.

This event involves dancing, display of fashion and on that very day, the women of the village are required to cook whatever they can cook with the yam. Some of them cook yam porridge, others roast their yams and some women prepare yam fufu.
