Tom Ripley is an underprivileged young adult whose prevailing desire is to belong to a
higher social class. He aims for the good life that Dickie and his friends have. However, Tom is
never received as an equal and this relationship drives sociopathic. Ripley was very unhappy
with his identity and rejects where he comes from. Tom feels like nobody and his dominant
ambition is to become somebody, no matter if he has to fake it, or steal it. Eventually, his lack of
individuality drives him into a jealous murderous rage. After killing his best friend, Tom is quite
good at lying to everyone and assuming Dickies identity. Tom develops a split personality where
he talks, dresses and acts like Dickie. Tom is a type of person who is very egocentric and
conceded. These character traits make him believe that he belongs to the higher social class and
is even better than them.
Ripleys sexuality plays a great role in his character. He is unsure whether he is straight
or gay. He has a succession of homosexual lovers. Yet, he is still attracted to women. In
“Talented Mr. Ripley” he was deeply in love with his best friend Dickie. However, in “Game of
Ripley” he was in a relationship with a woman. This switch of sexual polarity may have been
influenced by his split identity.
Ripley is a very talented person with a lot of luck. For example, when March accused
Tom of Dickies death, Mr. Greenleaf didnt believe her. He had a very bad opinion about his
son, what is more, he blamed that Dickie was guilty for every crime. Toms lifestyle is a very
risky one; increasing amount of things occurs that threaten his novel life. He spins more lies to
defend his hazardous life. At many points folks have all the facts they need to figure out the
truth, however, they never succeed to do so. What is more, Tom was financially supported by
Mr. Greenleaf. In my opinion, Tom Ripley is a very lucky guy, isnt he?!
Ripley is a talented man. Tom is good at faking both personalities and papers,
