How did the conflict happen?The school headmaster had assigned to me the task of preparing a time table for the training schedule for my school’s inter-school English quiz competition team. The headmaster is a man with a high vision. He wants the school’s quiz team to emerge as the champion team in the competition so that the image of the school could be raised and upgraded. He had reminded me several times that I must prepare a good time table so that all the training sessions could be carry out smoothly. He insisted that I must also ensure that the other teacher who is involved would be willing to work happily with me, without any complain! However, when the time table was distributed to my lady colleague, she started to grumble and complain. To solve the problem, I invited her to have a drink in the canteen the next day and at the same time having a negotiation with her about the matter.

Sometime over the previous week the school headmaster and the other teacher were meeting. In the meeting between the two they agreed regarding the time table and it became too tedious.

The next day while taking a cup of coffee and chatting with his fellow teacher, the other teacher was giving a short explanation about a situation that seemed right. He said that he did not want to send to everyone the final exams. Therefore he had to send it all in. He then told the other teacher to wait outside the other room until they were finished. But the time table could not be completed during the time because even before a second exam, it had to be brought to the time table so that it could be used for all the other exams. He also wanted to give the teacher the chance to know what he was thinking and to make sure that he got all the details right for his students. But the other teacher wasn’t interested in hearing the details of the time table. He also asked me a question before leaving the room. On the way out, he asked the person on the other end why she is taking the exam so early. He asked how long it is so that he could get it right.

When the two teachers finally found out I had taken exams, the other teacher immediately rushed inside the room with an explanation. He told me that I must get everything right the night before because of my time table. However, I wanted my time table ready so that all the important stuff to prepare for the exams is ready when the class begins tomorrow. So I asked him my personal reasons about why every exam is given early. When the other teacher gave the explanation that he was really thinking about the time table, I told him that I want it ready at all times so that when the exam is made, it will automatically be ready to be sent out right at the time of the test. Then I asked the other teacher if each test takes a little more than two hours. He said that only a simple question was needed to put together the time table. Thus, she agreed to have it ready while I gave my answer. He also asked about the other teacher’s reasons. He asked the other teacher how long is it the other two teachers agreed to to put together the time table. Then he asked me what questions I want to ask myself about that. I told him that I wanted to play a game and ask myself many questions and even give my own answer so that I can make sure that everything is ready within two hours. This was enough motivation to give me time to prepare for the exams.

He then asked me about the way the exams are made. I told him how it took the entire time to prepare the test as a first pass. Now, he suggested that no matter which way I give it, I will immediately put the exact date on the time table to be prepared. He also suggested that even if I ask myself the exact time it takes to put it together, it would be better if I could explain how it is prepared with a short explanation like the one I gave before. It seems that he was telling me this because a few people wanted to have different information about the test so they could tell what the test was made up from. Then he continued the conversation that I had earlier.

After my time table was finished and I sent the time table to him, before the test started, he came up to me.

“Sorry, I’m sorry.”
