Psy 2012 – Thought Paper
Anthony Aguilera9/8/15PSY2012Thought Paper 1        I would most definitely undergo testing; a 50/50 chance is something I would not gamble with even if the disorder develops in 20 years. One reason I’d say yes is that the results are guaranteed to be true, compared to developing cancer (as it shows no symptoms when it begins to develop), an opportunity to know for sure is something I would not pass up. A great example that comes to mind is Stephen Hawking, the influential theoretical physicist that suffers from ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. When he was diagnosed at 21 years old, the doctors told him he had only two years to live. In this case, Hawking obviously couldn’t undergo genetic testing to be warned of this earlier. He made the most of his presumed short life and beyond the given two years: marrying Jane Wilde, first-class honors in Oxford, and beginning a graduate degree in Cambridge. Hawking was given TWO years, if I had the opportunity to know I have twenty healthy years of my life left, I will definitely find out. I am not Stephen Hawking, but a positive result on the genetic test will not slow me down. I will probably make better choices in life as a matter of fact, ranging from my education, marriage, and the people around me (friends and family).         If I were to reject taking the genetic test, I do not think I would be able to just forget the fact that a 50/50 chance is looming over my head. That is a big reason on my decision as well:  the paranoia. It might actually be worse than developing the disease itself in my opinion, especially if I lived 20 years in fear then end up not developing the disease. Others will be able to forget or just not care when they reject this opportunity, however, my choices in life will probably be impacted just as significantly as if I tested positive. The only difference is that my choices will be made in fear of developing the disease.
