Failure is not an option “ as I read this quote and information I understood what they were meaning. They wanted to succeed and accomplish their mission. This mission did fail at the end, the important fact is that we successfully got everyone that was one that mission back safe and knowing to what change in the upcoming missions.
At a time when space exploration was a priority for the United States,
the Apollo 13 mission encountered problems from the beginning. To solve the problem required that astronauts exchange information about how to operate and develop new technology that led them to successful missions in the future. They need did have problems from the beginning. Two days before the mission was going to launch they were having problem with the pre-launch. This pre-launch show that they won’t ready with their technology part.
Apollo 13 was launched on April 11, 1970 from Kennedy space center in florida. The
crew members were; James A. Lovell Jr, John L. Swigert, and Fred W Haise. At first Thomas K. Mattingly was supposed to fly on the Apollo 13, but was exposed to the measles. He wasn’t able to go to space after that had happen to him so Swigert took his place.
Right before the launch happen one of the technicians saw that the helium tank had a higher pressure than all the other ones, but nothing was done to fix this problem. Also during the liftoff the second stage engine shut down, causing the other engines to take longer than planned.
During their flight the second oxygen tank exploded. The oxygen tank contained liquid that required for fuel and oxygen. The astronauts need to constantly stir the oxygen to prevent it from separating. The wires that were supposed to help stir the oxygen were badly damaged, causing a big fire when electricity was passed through them. This explosion caused the number one oxygen to be critically damaged.
