History and Purpose: Arizona was awarded the dumbest state award, by Morgan Quitno Press. The award is based on several criteria including literacy. Over 60% of residents had an education level of only 12 years (www.phoenix.gov). Phoenix Arizona is the 5th largest city in the U.S. and is younger than the national average of residents ranging between the ages of 18-54 years old(www.phoenix.gov). The warm climate, job opportunities and low cost of living attracts many residents form all over. In 10 years from 1990 to 2010 Phoenix is expected to grow by 45.3% in population. (www.realtee.com). Major business are also home to Phoenix such as Motorola, American Express and Honeywell. The city is a marketplace driven by technology and is continued to grow by 28.3% in businesses (www.bestplaces.com). To satisfy the needs of major businesses in search of adequate employees, the educational level and literacy issues of this major city must be addressed. Without major businesses doing business in this city, Phoenix will become the desert it once was. In an attempt to raise awareness of the profound long term negative effects of illiteracy and encourage residents to continue reading, Team C will has decided to run a non-profit community book festival in the city of Phoenix, Arizona.
Problem and Criteria As with any business either for profit or non profit, the major problem is the source of funds. Team C must prove that our non profits motive is for a social benefit. Where will our money come from?
