PTSD is a common yet often misunderstood condition; Posttraumatic Stress Disorder can be described as an extreme unbearable response to a traumatic event that devastates the brain and emotions. Any of these traumatic events can cause PTSD, including kidnapping, serious accident, natural disaster, violent attacks, for example mugging, rape, torture, or being held captive, or witnessing any of these events happen to another. In studies PTSD has been found in 48% of female inmates and 30% in male inmates.

After a traumatic experience, its normal to feel frightened, sad, anxious, and disconnected. Usually, as time passes, the upset fades and you start to enjoy life again. But sometimes the trauma you experienced is so overwhelming that you find that you cant move on. You feel stuck with painful memories that dont fade and a constant sense of danger.

Many people can get PTSD from a lot of different things such as combat natural disaster, or a killing of a close loved one. In order to be diagnosed with PTSD have had to experience an extreme traumatic stressor. Some of the symptoms of PTSD are re-experiencing for example, nightmares, flashbacks. Another symptom is avoidance and numbing such as, avoiding situation, amnesia, and isolation from others. Increased baseline physiological arousal is another symptom, which include insomnia, angry outburst or irritability.

Treatment for PTSD relieves symptoms by helping you deal with the trauma youve experienced. Rather than avoiding the trauma and any reminder of it, youll be encouraged in treatment to recall and process the emotions and sensations you felt during the original event. In addition to offering an outlet for emotions youve been bottling up, treatment for PTSD will also help restore your sense of control and reduce the powerful hold the memory of the trauma has on your life.
