This paper is that explores Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) and the Nervous System in our bodies. This paper shows us the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) medical problems, signs and symptoms, and diseases, as well as, identifying what care an EMT would be responsible for regarding those medical issues in patients they might encounter.

The Nervous System is complex system that regulates the bodies activities. The Nervous system is composed of the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems. The Central Nervous System consists of the brain and spinal cord. The Peripheral Nervous System is made up or neural elements such as the peripheral and autonomic nerves. But there is way more than the brain, spinal cord, and the nerves involved. What is also involved is the eyes, ears, sense of taste, sense of smell, and the sensory receptors that are located in the joints and muscles.

There are so many signs and symptoms that occur with the Nervous System. According to John Hopkins Medicine the following signs and symptoms of Nervous System Disorders are; a persistent or sudden onset of a headache, a headache that changes or is different, people will experience loss of feeling or tingling, weakness or loss of muscle strength, some will have sudden loss of sight or double vision, others may experience memory loss, have impaired mental ability, some may lack of coordination, have muscle rigidity, some may experience tremors and seizures, others will experience severe back pain which radiates to the feet, toes, or other parts of the body, and some will have muscle wasting and slurred speech (J. Hopkins Medicine, 2016). Not everyone will show the same signs and symptoms, so you may want to consult your healthcare provider for a diagnosis.

There are many disorders that are associated with the Nervous System. Those disorders are characterized into 5 groups. Those 5 groups are vascular disorders, infections, structural disorders, functional disorders, and degeneration. Involved with vascular system the disorders are stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hemorrhage and hematoma, and extradural hemorrhage (J. Hopkins Medicine, 2016). The infection disorders are meningitis, encephalitis, polio, and epidural abscess (J. Hopkins Medicine, 2016). The structural disorders that are included in the nervous system are brain or spinal cord injury, Bells palsy, cervical spondylosis, carpal tunnel syndrome, brain or spinal cord tumors, peripheral neuropathy, and Guillain-Barré syndrome (J. Hopkins Medicine, 2016). The functional disorders are headache, epilepsy, dizziness, and neuralgia (J. Hopkins Medicine, 2016). The Degeneration disorders that are involved with the nervous system are Parkinson disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington chorea, and Alzheimer disease (J. Hopkins Medicine, 2016).
