Vanity. There is really no other reason for somebody getting a sun tan then their own vanity. The perception of beauty comes with a far greater risk than the social reward of having of fabulous tan. Girls in particular have an affliction for changing the tone of their skin. People in the western world, associate tan skin with sexiness, beauty and popularity.

Tanning often results in higher than normal ultraviolet radiation from the sun or artificial sources such as a tanning bed. Although some ultraviolet radiation can be good for your body and provide Vitamin D, it can also cause harmful effects on your health. Melanoma is a type of fatal skin cancer that develops in pigment cells called melanocytes. If caught early, most melanomas can be cured with a minor surgery. Melanoma could begin as a mole but can also begin in other pigmented tissues, such as in the eye or in the intestines. According to (Poole) Melanoma Prevention and Protection Treatment, there has been a 2000% increase in Melanoma cases since 1930. It is the most common cancer in young women, and in 2012 over 60,000 new cases of invasive Melanoma was diagnosed in the US. One person dies each hour from melanoma and the rate is rising on a global scale.

Melanoma is not the only problem that is associated with over exposure to UV Rays, over a period of time, people with lighter complexion as well as dark complexion people will get freckles from UV ray exposure. Various cellular absorption causes random dark spots which people commonly call freckles. Although, freckles are generally not life threatening, they do appear as a result of over exposure to the sun.

The problem does not stop with freckles, after years of exposure to the sun many people find that the areas of their body, that were exposed on a regular routine will develop rough patches on their skin from the Trubcutenous layer of the skin. These dry spots or lesions can eventually lead to cancer or more seriously to melanoma. Chemical peels and laser treatment are generally required to alleviate these situations.

As many people get older, wrinkles start to be a part of your skin on your body. By tanning you age your skin twice as fast than it would do naturally. Many women and men spend thousands of dollars each year, trying to get rid of wrinkles. Which brings us to the cost of tanning.
