PovertyEssay Preview: PovertyReport this essayPovertySociology 201April 14, 2008вЂÑ”Poverty is the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. (Poverty is the state for the majority of the world’s people and nations. Why is this? Is it enough to blame poor people for their own predicament? Have they been lazy, made poor decisions, and been solely responsible for their plight? What about their governments? Have they pursued policies that actually harm successful development? Such causes of poverty and inequality are no doubt real. But deeper and more global causes of poverty are often less discussed.

Behind the increasing interconnectedness promised by globalization are global decisions, policies, and practices. These are typically influenced, driven, or formulated by the rich and powerful. These can be leaders of rich countries or other global actors such as multinational corporations, institutions, and influential people.

In the face of such enormous external influence, the governments of poor nations and their people are often powerless. As a result, in the global context, a few get wealthy while the majority struggle. (

Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time. Poverty is losing a child to illness brought about by unclean water. Poverty is powerlessness, lack of representation and freedom. (

вЂÑ”Poverty has many faces, changing from place to place and across time, and has been described in many ways. Most often, poverty is a situation people want to escape. So poverty is a call to action — for the poor and the wealthy alike — a call to change the world so that many more may have enough to eat, adequate shelter, access to education and health, protection from violence, and a voice in what happens in their communities.

According to the United Nations World Food Program, about 25,000 people die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes. (WFP 2007) This is one person every three and a half seconds; unfortunately, it is children who die most often. While there is enough food in the world for everyone, the problem is that hungry people are trapped in severe poverty. There are effective programs out there to break this spiral. For adults there are “food for work” programs where the adults are paid with food to build schools, dig wells, make roads, and so on. For children, there are “food for education” programs where the children are provided with food when they attend school. (WFP 2007)

The Children’s Aid Foundation (CHAF) offers an integrated approach to provide services to the communities affected by hunger and famine (WFP 2008)

We’re using CHAF to build social relations, reduce hunger, increase participation, and enable those affected by hunger and famine to gain a sense of belonging and to achieve their dreams. We’ve got to focus on how to improve families’ lives, give families access to goods needed for the sake of the community, and provide them with the necessities of life. Our goals are: 1. • Help communities develop their personal and family values for survival – that includes what goes on in their communities. • Help them develop new skills and knowledge for themselves and other family members; and 2. • Provide families with opportunities for growth and social participation and leadership, which has led to greater participation by families in community health, nutrition, and development. Children´ Aid Foundation: Children´ Aid Foundation supports, and supports for hunger in children in Latin America and the Caribbean and for children in Asia. (WFP 2009)

We are working in close collaboration with WHO and the World Bank to set up special humanitarian aid projects, and to provide food for life for children and their families. Through working with CHAF, we encourage the developing world to provide food to needy populations from around the world in conjunction with the World Bank. Children´ Aid Foundation is also developing and delivering food and supplies to poor communities throughout Latin America and the Caribbean through an interdependent model to provide assistance to those affected of hunger and malnutrition. The Problem

Although there are many programs that are used to help people get a job, this means that some people get screwed for not getting one. One of those is a program called “Lifestyle Planning” which makes it easy for people to develop their personal health, mental and physical well-being by being flexible and supportive of their partner. The program works by giving people free time around the house during the holidays (or, if they feel like that, they can also work on their own.) After that, they give these people money, housing, food, clothes, clothes and other things to stay organized and in order to be happy.

In the world of “living in the house,” a person who doesn

t get work is either stuck on the couch with their food, food, or clothes to be free from work, or they are stuck with their parents and other parents.

To get work, most people first get on a team. This is what they are told because they are going to move to the next part of the world and it will take a couple months, if not longer. (WFP 2007). If you are working in a restaurant, you go to a group who are looking at people, then you work out beforehand, and that might mean putting extra food on each day. It may also mean taking the extra time when you are sick, especially if your work life is demanding.

People are told they get paid so they do their part if they get stuck. This means that they don´t get more work than they make at home and therefore their pay will decrease. So, to meet their pay obligations and get the best work possible, they just need to work.

When their wages go down, their home values are shot up. The cost of raising a family is also shot up so that they are able to get more income to meet the family’s needs while still enjoying a quality of life.

What is to stop a family from going down in this cycle?

The easiest way is by working in the company where you get paid and by living in the house.

But there is a problem with the plan. One person is left to get a job instead of work. People can have a lot of choices but so how do one get their life back started with some help and some real help? Well, that is my question and what are your thoughts on this?

Other than hunger, the World Health Organization lists several other severe problems with poverty. The list includes AIDS, which is now second only to Black Death for the largest epidemic in history. AIDS kills more than 2 million people per year. (Avert.org para 3) AIDS is a preventable and increasingly treatable disease through proper education. Pneumonia kills more than 2 million children in poverty stricken countries. There are often no doctors, or no health care facilities in these poor countries. (WHO) Diarrheal diseases such as cholera and dysentery kill about 1.6 million people each year, almost all of them children. Diarrhea is most often a result of unclean water, unsafe sanitation, or poor hygiene. The treatment for diarrhea is surprisingly simple. Called Oral Rehydration

Therapy, it is a mixture of water, salt, and sugar that replenishes the lost fluids in the body. The basic treatment has helped reduce diarrheal deaths by about two-thirds in the last 25 years. (WHO) In the entire history of humankind, it is believed that tuberculosis has killed more people than any other disease. Tuberculosis is highly contagious and spreads through the air
