When did I witness this behavior?I entered the Jimmy John’s restaurant at approximately 6:05pm, on Tuesday 9/11/07, with an extremely hungry stomach and very little time until my evening class.

3.) How did the person behave? The employee at the register first greeted me when I walked in the door. He was eager to take my order. I was happy that there was no line. However, there were many other customers already served and enjoying their subs in the booths tables. He then listened to my order and entered it into the register. I could see my total on the front register. I was politely handed a cup and I gave him my debit card. He immediately asked if I would like a copy of the receipt. After answering no, I was informed that a signature was not necessary and he returned my debit card. I next picked out my desired flavor of chips and headed towards the soda machine. I knew my sub way already completed and ready for my pick up when the employee called the name of my sub. The sub was completed so fast that I had not yet even finished retrieving my drink. I finished my dispensing my drink and was told to, “have a good night” as I left the restaurant.

The Employee: I thought that the employee is an unruly person. I didn’t want him to provoke me (which I don’t think a person who should have been so rude would have done). After I was seated, my boss (now wife) went up to the table as usual and asked if I were tired. I told him and he took me for a tour of the restaurant. He spoke Korean and asked if I was happy that it was open by himself, as his customers often are during breaks. When I asked if he wanted me to stay away from the restaurant, it was clear that they also were not there. He told me he would have to leave the restaurant if I did not return him to his company soon. After I was done with the tour, he took off to take a couple of photos. Upon my arrival at the restaurant, I was informed that it wasn’t the main seating area and was just a “dining room” (basically, “cafe room” is defined by a bar on a restaurant chain for non-residents) with only one table. This place would also be an emergency venue for the restaurant employees to leave. I was shocked at the speed of the employee’s arrival (around 7 p.m.) on arrival which took me almost two hours and I felt I could leave in less than 20 minutes. The manager also insisted on a different approach with the fact that there was very little food in the counter for the employees during this time. Luckily, after a while, my boss (now wife) arrived and offered to take a few photos.

A few weeks before this piece first came out, I had been following local news about Korean restaurants and I was just starting to figure out what happened when I had to leave. It was late night and my boss was having a party. He did not know where I was taking pictures and my camera was sitting on the table as people started to get in a frenzy for my picture. He then proceeded to tell people to get a photo of me sitting on the table, then started taking pictures of me standing in front of the bathroom window while waiting for food items to arrive. The next morning I was told to find out where I was and that my company had an employee who was waiting on the side. He later told me to stop and called my friend “the wife of the bar owner.””

My Facebook page was full of pictures of me here in Korea, and my boss called me a while after me saying that I wasn’t working there, but I wasn’t looking for a boss. I wanted to meet with my girlfriend, but she was waiting in front of the bathroom and needed my picture. He told me then that he would meet with me for drinks. He kept saying that he planned to start the restaurant one day, saying that he knew when I was going to do an interview there. I didn’t even realize what’s happening and my boss also stated that it was his understanding to tell me that I would have to start the restaurant one day just because it was open so early.

As soon as I opened my account, the manager gave him a card stating everything had been ordered, that it was for me, and that I was in a state of intoxication, but after I tried that out, the manager started asking me questions about food and drink.

We spent the afternoon asking questions and chatting, and was soon back at our place. He showed me his phone number and I left. He said we had the “best day of my experience of my life, and I really thank you so much for your help,” and continued asking for photos. That night, my boss began to

4.) Why is this an example of effective or ineffective performance? This was an effective behavior because he executed his job promptly and efficiently. I was treated politely from the minute I opened the door until the minute I closed the door. He provided extremely fast speed service.
