The stressors of Phil cam be classified by Work-related stressors and Non-work stressors. According the situation as reported, it can be believed that his stress are mostly from the former.

The first stressor is the role-related stressors. Phil is a vice-president which can be regarded as high-stress occupation. He is a classic Type A person who is devote to work and highly competitive. He have the chance to be promoted to president. At the same time, there are serval competitors for the top position and his subsidiaries or colleague hope to replace him. Also about sixty people are working for him. So, he would work very hard to maintain the best performance.

The second stressor is the heavy workload. Since he is an important person in the company and need to perform well, he work for six days a week and always work until night. It leads to unhealthy lifestyle with imbalance between work and leisure time. As mentioned, his time for rest is only ‘playing’ golf game. He do not have time to build up a new habit to do relaxing activities. He almost have no time for rest.

The third stressor is the non-work stressors including time-based conflict and strain-based conflict. Since Phil consume most of the time for work, he can only spend very few times to his family. Therefore, strain-based conflict is induced. Phil has become alienated from his family especially with his children. His First son and second daughter even rarely talk with him. It is unhealthy when his family is lack of communication.

The above stressors induce a high level of stress to Phil, which lead to Physiological and Psychological Consequences. It is believed by the medical researchers that high level of stress can cause illness to one person. Phil is died of a coronary thrombosis, which is a kind of heart disease. It may result from a long-term effect of stress. Also, the pressure deteriorate his family relationship may be threat to his physiological health.

Unfortunately, in this case, Phil had gone with fatal disease. However, the answer of whether his colleague will have the same fate is possibly not. It depends on the individual characteristics, because different people in the same situation receive different stress level and have different tactics to deal with it. It also depends on individual’s self-efficacy, personality, stress symptoms and experience on coping with stress.

In Phil’s case, Phil had made effort on reducing his stress level. He manage his diet even he was busy, he ate. Also, he did not take cigarette. Also, his boss are likely to accomplish Phil’s effort and encourage four working days per week. However, it is not enough to reduce his stress. In this case, both of them can do more to avoid the tragedy. For example, Phil can receive support from social and even in the company. He can seek help from social worker and talk about his difficulties. His
