Pornography is a common form of sexual exploitation at this and other industries and is estimated to account for $6 billion in revenue annually in the U.S. in 2015. A 2012 study in the journal The Journal of International Finance and Economics revealed that, as of September, 2012, there were 4.7 million adult prostitution victims in the U.S. There are 2.6 million cases of domestic sexual exploitation per year in the U.S. and 7.6 million domestic and non-domestic sex violence victims. Prostitution is primarily performed at home, home-based (a practice which is illegal in many countries) family facilities, with the exception of high-risk settings such as brothels. It also takes place on the part of female customers or prospective clients, such as children and pimps, in order to satisfy clients’ sexual desires. Prostitution is also illegal in certain states such as California and New Jersey, including the District of Columbia, but these jurisdictions are also prohibited from prohibiting prostitution in public places, places of employment or in certain communities. Prostitutes are forced to perform sexual acts or engage in sexually coercive acts in order to gain entry. A 2005 study in this journal reported that for any given year, one in four women in the U.S. will experience or attempt to rape. However, in some states, prostitution is allowed in more than half of the states, as long as it includes only physical and sexual contact. Sexual harassment laws, though not in any way limited to these states, are widely observed to place even more emphasis on the physical and psychological needs of prostitutes. The National Institute for Health Research recently published a study in The Journal of the American Medical Association, which looked at a range of measures that have been used to place men behind bars in their lifetime. The first was a comprehensive survey of 3,289 men who were convicted since 1979 of child rape, or one in nine men. The second was the Men’s Rights Project (MRP)–funded research that found that men had twice the levels of mental health problems as women did.
The MRP surveys also found that it is not uncommon for men to be arrested for “moral turpitude” in their sexual dealings with girls, while the report notes that there have been a number of documented cases of underage alcohol consumption among the men and women who had been arrested.
