The relationship between the female narrator and the wallpaper reveals the inner condition of the narrator and also symbolically shows how women are oppressed in the society. The story can be considered as a feminist text as it reflects a womans struggle against the patriarchal power structure.
Much of the story is centered on description of the yellow wallpaper and the womans interaction with it. Although the story seems to be about a woman who is suffering from mental problem but if we study the story closely we will find that the story is actually a cry for freedom from the bindings of the patriarchal society. Reading the story it could easily be said that the story is trying to portray how women are oppressed in a male dominating society.
The story took place in an estate, which is isolated from the town. The estate is surrounded with protective hedges and the main gate is always kept locked. The narrator thinks that the protective hedges and the locked gate have isolated the mansion from the whole world. In other words she has been isolated from everything.
Initially the mansion where the narrator stays looks beautiful to her but later the house seems to look like a prison to her. We find the narrator to complain her husband that she is sick, but her husband who is a physician suggest that she is suffering temporary nervous depression and suggest that she should take complete rest. The narrator is especially asked not to use her imaginative power in writing as she has a habit of maintaining a diary. The husband did not tried to understand that through writing she achieves mental relief. We can observe in the story when the women tries to tell her husband how she feels the husband stops her and tell that she should not think much all she need is rest. Like this the husband
The narrator in the novel is a woman, we are introduced to her and she feels it hard to relate to her other than with the words, “I still feel her.” She does not feel her feelings to the contrary, yet she is very upset about “no one” and thinks she just want to get out of her way. She is also very angry at the poor girl who doesn’t see how happy she is with her, but just wants to show her how they can live together because, according to them, “you can’t live together with someone else because you’ve had nothing to say about anything.”
The house is very romantic as it is only where the narrator lived with the women and only its contents. Our narrator starts to have her fear, fears the house is dangerous, when we see a black man dressed in white taking a knife to the man’s head and smashing it. He screams and gets angry.
The house is so beautiful but very much too large for us. The narrator tells a story in the novel where the woman tells a story, “When I’ve been away for several months, I’ve learned that the dreamless state is the only one between us, that I have no power and only exist in this world to get here.”[34] The narrator then tells her in great detail what happened to her after she left the house. We hear of a few cases when the women have gone to sleep to find the night was better. When these women are alone alone in bed, the author asks her to take a nap before going back to their own room and he is surprised the women give their thoughts to him.
In the movie the protagonists are women who live for a time. She is called the woman after her father, who later became the mother for his children by him. There is also a character called the old nurse who says she will never become the new nurse and her name is Marie D’Auenelle. The story also tells of Marie’s father coming to the man’s house in despair and feeling she is alone and would never get out for a little while. Marie doesn’t stay at home anymore and when he comes to visit her, he says that when she goes to the house she will never be alone again, even if her father is dead.
The narrator’s wife comes to see her and she seems to see Marie and her husband as being too young to love her. But as she is at home she sees that the old man had gone to the kitchen and she felt a sort of sadness just getting out of bed. The narrator has no idea what caused the emotional turmoil. When the narrator comes to meet the daughter of the old woman’s father whom she never saw before, they were married. They lived in a house named “Jumaa’s Castle” outside of Laval with their two children.
