In the world that we live in now there are many types of medical treatment. One of the many is acupuncture. Acupuncture is a procedure used in or adapted from Chinese medical practice in which specific body areas are pierced with fine needles for therapeutic purposes or to relieve pain or produce regional anesthesia. Acupuncture has become part of medical world. Some people find it amazing how acupuncture can be so effective and some find its effectiveness questionable. Whether one believes in its effectiveness or not acupuncture is now an alternative healthcare treatment.

Acupuncture is a form of medical treatment that originated in China over 2,000 years ago. The principles of acupuncture are based on the belief that there are patterns of energy flow called Qi and that these patterns of energy flow through the body along with a balance of yin and yang are essential for a person’s overall health. Acupuncture is used to clear or correct any imbalance within this energy flow. Acupuncture utilizes solid metal needles as a tool for correcting Qi imbalances. This form of medical treatment was scarce in America until 1972 when President Nixon visited China. From that time on it has become popular to apply acupuncture to western medicine. Acupuncture which originated in China is now used all over the world as a form of medical treatment.

The literal meaning of Acupuncture is piercing needles. The definition it self can describe how the treatment is done. Acupuncture can be characterized as a serious of procedures that involves stimulation of anatomical locations on the skin. Stimulation is done by penetration of the skin by thin solid needles. Stimulation can be done by a number of different techniques such as manual stimulation or electrical stimulation. Other forms of stimulations include the use of pressure, heat, or laser as a form of acupuncture practice.
