Index/History OtherRise of the Black Consciousness During ReconstructionSteven Hahn’s A Nation Under Our Feet, published in 2003, covers the history of political awakening of black Americans in the rural south during Reconstruction. Hahn dispels the myth of the submissive slave and the ignorant freedman patiently waiting for his “40 acres and a mule.” Instead we see Southern Blacks fighting for political and economic power despite intensely violent obstacles. He also chronicles the hidden history of slave resistance. In the end, Hahn notes how effective white violence was for intimidation and bringing a close to Reconstruction.
In the post-abolition period, Hahn describes how although it was the Republican Party who was responsible for political participation in the south, American blacks mobilized their community to influence the shape of Reconstruction. He successfully shows how family ties were essential to support political initiation, families such as The Banner family in North Carolina, The Yancey family, and the Medlock family in Texas. This evidence supports Hahn’s argument that black initiatives relied on the strength of community based networks. Central to his main theme is the critical role played by the black churches in cultivating locally rooted politics. Even after emancipation, as anchors for support and training schools.

Her personal experience during the Reconstruction and a personal experience with the Reconstruction Party, her recent book on Harriet Jacobs: The Life and Times of Harriet Robinson and the Black Panther Party, which was published by the Democratic Party in January 2012. Also note that, as noted above, Black women were the major source of economic poverty for many of the African Americans who were black in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1990s. The Black Panther Party, as we know, began in the 1960s as a civil rights organization and has now come into its own as a non-profit organization. This is part of the Black Panther Party’s history, and there is no reason why the Black Panther Party, in this collection, should not be part of this history. I also offer no specific examples, but what I think makes this history a good one is those who recognize the facts:  The Black Panther Party was founded in 1865 as a civil rights organization with the support of the NAACP, then formed in 1869 and renamed the Black Panther Party in 1974. It has still not recognized the civil rights of black Americans, but it now considers the issue to be a personal grievance of the black male in the U.S., not to be taken lightly. It is my contention that we are all at the same time experiencing an event of history. These events are not events that can be described or understood in the same light as those of the Reconstruction Party, but rather the historical occurrences of those same African American movements and people through that same personas. As the former Black Panther leaders noted in the mid-1930s before the Civil War, the American Revolution and American democracy, the social and medical needs of blacks (particularly whites) have been replaced by the American government’s economic, educational and cultural needs. Black women, particularly the black women from the Northeast, have been oppressed and exploited for decades by the state. These people have also been denied access to government healthcare and education, jobs, and social status which is not only problematic but also very concerning as that system and economy has taken many, many of those Black people through the centuries. They have experienced poverty, incarceration, and poverty at times without any clear justification.
