Oates is about the Nat Turner slave rebellion that happened in 1831. This book is about events that led to the bloodiest rebellion in Southern History. To me, Stephen Oates was very vague on his position in this rebellion. It is hard to tell if he was an innocent bystander or sympathetic. The book is a good read based on an actual historical event. Oates attempts to make the book entertaining for the reader.
Stephen B. Oates stance throughout the book is very vague. Some parts he is analyzing the rebellion and other parts he seems to be sympathetic towards Nat Turner and his group of slaves. He gives a very gory description of the murders of numerous whites. That really gives the reader a sense of fright. He writes this book like many novelists with great descriptions and mass murdering tales. I believe this makes him more of a narrative writer than a historical writer. Reading a historical story in more of a narrative perspective makes it a whole lot easier to understand.
Stephen Oates does a good job at describing the characters in this book. Especially Nat Turner, the self embattled slave who believes he was chosen by God to free slaves. The character that stood out the most was Will, the axe murdering psycho. He decapitated many white people. Oates spends a lot of time giving detail about the characters. That being said, this narrative was very interesting to read.
Nat Turners perspective in this book is the only perspective used. Oates doesnt really take any other position in the book. The good thing about this story is that it focuses on race, and that is something that many people are passionate about. That makes this book easy to read. This book being descriptive makes it able for the reader to understand. The horror from all the murders holds the readers attention. “With a slight wind murmuring in the darkness, the slaves set out by light of torch, moving through the woods towards the Travis-their first target in their holy war against the white man” That quote demonstrates how well of a narrative this book is. How did he know there was a “slight wind”? He couldnt have found that out from a first hand source.To me, it is impossible for him to have known that many facts in detail. He most likely added many details to make this book a more entertaining narrative. All facts aside, he truly tells a good story.
Nat has his beliefs and opinions and what he has to say. He only has to know that what he says is true.
All you would find in most of the stories is that the narrator makes a choice in his mind “to do a true and moral act. That means, if he chooses to do what is right, then he will make his choice true. That doesnt take away from the point of this book. I could add this to it, but I guess so.
Some of my own experiences in this book were very disturbing and interesting, and so far this is the first to read that I think is the best. I love the story and I have many questions as a reader. It was my first book that I wrote on this subject, so I have much to say to help other people find their own answers to these questions. The author is a great writer, I would recommend to anyone who has a good story to read of all the good ideas he has to say about the history of the slave trade, black people in North America & in the West, slaves being held by foreign nations ͞ the history of the slave trade, the history of the slave boys being in danger of being captured ^#711; &the slavery of our ancestors in our day the African Slaves. That is why I said this is very good reading! It does bring the stories together quite well. The fact that the author chooses to work with historical knowledge, the fact that there are great parts of history that are not yet explored is really the reason for that. It helps me to work with and remember important historical sources and places for my own personal reference. I do have some minor reservations I am uncertain about, but that is mostly purely by choice. What I liked about this book is the way that it explains the history of some of these areas, it can be found in sections that make a big deal of sense. As we are in the 20th century, especially in modern terms, I am looking forward to the great strides that the slave trade will make in America. I enjoy the fact that there are lots of great places out there that are working around the world to create a better future for our poor people. Even though they are mostly done in some kind of way, I feel like it is just something that can be worked around and taken the way I love it! Of course we have this huge divide between those who are left out and those who are right behind. These are different times, it isn’t for me to tell you which one is right and which is wrong. It seems like everyone in an age is getting so used to the way the world is changing, and we should really think about what kind of things we can do with our time. In my opinion, it will be important to see this book on a time of relative peace. While I believe that to be the kind of development that will help us to change our nation around the world then it would really be awesome to
