The mental health disorder we chose to base our culminating on was Anxiety. Now before we begin to deliberate on how anxiety relates to the film, “Napoleon Dynamite” we are going to discuss anxiety, as a whole. Anxiety disorders are categorized into 4 types. The main form of , found in the movie, is the more common ‘social anxiety’ disorder. The three other serious disorders entail: Panic attacks, specific phobias and the generalized anxiety disorder. Napoleon is a student in high school who has trouble with bullying and because of this, the trouble with communication. Then there is Jennifer, she has difficulty dealing with stressful situations.

The first type of anxiety disorder we are going to talk about are panic attacks. People with this condition have feelings of terror that come out of nowhere and with no warning. Other symptoms of a panic attack include sweating, chest pain, palpitations and a feeling of choking. It feels like you’re having a stroke or losing your mind. Although there are no major parts of the movie that entail a panic attack or this disorder it still falls under the category of anxiety disorders. Treatment for this disorder is the same as getting treatment for specific phobias, Extensive hours of psychiatric aid. There are some medications one may take to counter act anxiety such as Xanax.

The second anxiety disorder we are going to talk about are phobias. These are intense fears of a specific object or situation, such as heights or flying. The amount of fear is usually highly exaggerated compared to the situation and may lead you to avoid common, everyday situations. In the movie this is seen in Napoleon. His fear is the fear of people he is what you would call anthrophobic. There are many different types of phobias some are very serious and make sense but most are irrational and usually do not follow any logic. Most of these phobias are generated from traumatic early childhood experiences that were burned into the individuals self conscious. There is treatment for these phobias but most involve psychiatric aid. Some common phobias include: Mysophobia which is the fear of germs and other dirty particles. Another common phobia is Trypanophobia which is the fear of getting injections.
