They also differed in the geography. These three aspects are very important to both the Southern colonies and the New England colonies.

Religion was very different between the two groups. The New England colonies were founded by Puritans; therefore Puritanism was a major influence in how they lived their everyday lives. The Puritans believed in predestination, which is the belief that God has already chosen who will go to Heaven or not. The people of the Southern colonies were either Baptist or Protestant. The Southern colonists were widely spread from one another, so they concentrated more on their farms. Religion wasnt the only thing that was different between the two colonies.

The social structures of both colonial groups were very diverse. The social structure of the New England colonies relied heavily on religion. The people of the New England colonies were mostly Puritan, so they believed that everyone should help one another. They also admired education. In the southern colonies, land ownership was the most valuable. Owning much land meant having wealth and power. Plantation owners were at the top of the social pyramid, while the slaves were at the bottom.

The geography of the colonies was important as well. The geography of the New England colony was very rocky. There were a lot of trees and hills, making the land uncharacteristic for farming.
