“When Paul and I were first friends, starting in the sixth grade and seventh grade” Art Garfunkel reminisced, “we would sing a little together and we would make up radio shows and become disc jockeys on our home wire recorder. And then came rock and roll” He was one of the best harmonizers ever. He truly shows how creative soft rock is.

Today “modern” or “alternative” rock is good music for the most part, but the problem is that it is not creative. It just takes what someone in the past had felt combines it with sex, drugs and someone elses riffs and then they call it their own. Soft Rock, yes this is an immense genre, but the people behind the beginning, middle and end of this amazing part of the worlds cultural history were some of the worlds true visionaries. Stevie Nicks, Don Henley, Natalie Merchant and Norah Jones were only some of the greats who started this genre.

Soft rock is a style of music which uses the techniques of rock music (often combined with elements from folk rock and singer-songwriter pop) to compose a softer, more toned-down sound. Soft rock songs generally tend to focus on themes like love, everyday life and relationships.

Taking this into consideration and looking towards some of the greats who started the genre for inspiration, I was able to create a piece which uses the practices, instrumentation and techniques of the soft rock era. I personally consider this piece to fit into the category of soft rock due to the reason behind my piece.
