The Socialization Process
The socialization process is the way by which I learn acceptable behavior in my culture. This process involves social control, as it is an attempt by others to shape the way I behave. As I develop certain values and adopt norms, this too becomes a form of social control, as I place limits on what I consider to be acceptable or “normal” behavior. The socialization process continues throughout my life of socialization. First, I usually encounter my families. This primary socialization teaches me the basic social skills of life. The values I learn from my parents stay with me throughout life. Socialization builds on my family values, for example acceptable behavior within larger groups.These rules become “norms” that are carried with me throughout life. Failure to conform with the expectations of others are met by social sanctions, for example, in school classroom a student that isseen as disruptive would be removed from the classroom, this would be an attempt to teach the studentthat behavior that disrupts the class is not acceptable within that social group. This social control will be
used to shape the student into acceptable members of the school society. Throughout socialization I’m often faced with an informal form of social control, this happens when I don’t meet the expectations of a group, for example, If I don’t wear the “right clothes” may not be accepted into a certain social group. The accepted norms of a group of teenagers for example, may not necessarily be acceptable behavior for adult life, therefore people are continually adapting their behavior throughout life.I focus on work, but continues with social peer groups. In my adult hood, social status is recognized more and often comes with wealth, but. I also chose a career that I can improve social status. A doctor may not necessarily be wealthy, but is highly respected within society, this giving them a higher social status. Adult socialization involves the learning of specific expectations associated with new roles, for example parenthood. Social control is still encountered as an adult as an adult must abide be the laws,
