Social networking is when a group of people are grouped into a specific group, whether they are small rural communities or a neighborhood subdivision. However, one of the most popular is online social networking. Just like anything else, online social networking has it pros and cons. But in particular, Human Resource Managers are constantly finding themselves on daily basis dealing with new and upcoming problems with employees. One of the number one causes for disruption in the workplace is social networks. In recent years, no one would have known that something would be introduced into society that would change the whole world in such period of time and so dramatically. To name a few, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Myspace, Google Plus+, and many more have exposed these vicarious networking sites and nevertheless, to consider the problems that they would cause many people. Not only have social networking cause problems for Human Resource Management, but they have caused problems among the ranks of family members, friends, organizations, and businesses.

Employers should condition themselves around social networks and have expectations of what they will bring. There are no laws of protection to prohibit people from using social networking. Employers can however, ban the use of social networks in the workplace. A lot of employers are using social networks to screen employees before they are hired and even when they are hired. It has been know that a lot of employee’s information about themselves is not leaked out by employers or co-workers but by social networks. Social networks also cause problems with employees being treated unfairly. To prevent the discrimination among employees by social networks, employers can develop policy and use them uniformly. As stated in the article, “It would behoove employers to develop a uniform policy both internal and external Internet use.” Internal internet use occurs when the employer or employee use social networking websites as a function of their jobs. Internal policies that employers may want to consider includes notifying the employees that their internet usage is being monitored at work. Also, the employer should notify the employees that discrimination of confidential information, negative comments about the employer or fellow employees, and accessing certain websites may be grounds for discipline.
