Snowplow Parent
The term “snowplow parent” describes parents who help their child so much that the child never faces any challenges or obstacles.  To understand the meaning behind this expression, think about the job of a snowplow, which is a vehicle that moves snow off of the road.  This allows cars to drive without slipping or getting stuck.  Snowplows keep drivers safe and prevent accidents.  Yet, the term “snowplow parent” is usually negative, and describes a parent who helps his or her child too much.  Growing up in Vermont, I saw how snowplows are helpful and make it easier to drive.  I also learned that they are not always necessary.  Vermont cannot afford to plow the roads each time it snows, so the plows only come out when there is several inches of snow.  When there is only a little snow, it is still possible to drive on a road that has not been plowed.  It may be a little slippery, but you can slow down and reach your destination safely.  If it keeps snowing, you will need to be more careful.  You should get snow tires on your car, drive slowly, and keep your lights on.  It might be a stressful and long drive, but you can still get there.  Of course, if there is a huge snow storm, it may be impossible to drive.  Your car will get stuck, or it will slide down a hill.  Vermonters know when to drive normally, when to drive with caution, and when to wait for a snowplow.  They are not scared of a little bit of snow, but understand that the drive will be more difficult.
