In the story, “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omeals,” bye Ursela Le Guin, the Festival of Summer comes to the cito of Omelas, but that is not mainly what the story is about. The story is mainly about small child living deep uner a local store. He/she has been locked under the store for a very long time, living on nothing but ……… and sitting in its own feces. It has never been out in the real world and never will. The town has put the small child there and say they cannot

let it out now because the town myst be happy 24/7 and letting the child out fr even 30 minutes will be 30 minutes of tourture. Everyone in the town has seen the child at least once and sometimes more. Infact sometimes someone in the town will walk straight out of the frount gates and never return because the sight of the small child is so bad.

The boy/girl under the store is very similar to a book I have read many times intitled, A Child Called It, by Dave Peltzer. Both children in the stories had basically no chance for survival or a normal life. In the book, A Child Called It, the small boy is forced to live in a dork unfit place where he has never had one friend to his name, much like the person in the story I read, “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas.”

The story tells us that the towns people have seen this child so they will know how good and pleasant there lives are, but sometimes its too much to stand and people leave the town and never come back. Why doenst anyone do something about this? If its so bad then let the child out. I know the child will have poor motor skills, social skills, and badically he will be behind with everything he does, but isnt there at least one person in this town who could help? Isnt there one person who doesnt care to be happy 24 hours of the day and isnt selfish, who will let the poor child have a chance at life?

This story is one of the saddest stories I have read all year. Lu Guin shows lots of human emotions in this story and as you read it you will feel each emotion. First theres happiness for the town celebrating its festival of summer, then sadness as they describle the small child, then anger sets in when they state how no one helps and the whole town just……., after all that finally comes the shock and disappointment for the towns people who leave and never return. This story made me think and be thankfun that I wasnt
