But officials are also searching for a woman.
Sherry D. Brown said “something has snapped. There are a lot of kids, and as they’ve gone from school to play and play until they are older, many are at home,” she said.
Searchers remain still looking for the body on Monday, but several are still trying to piece together how it happened.
Authorities aren’t saying why the child was found at the beach on Thursday, but she says she and others called from across the South Texas coast were shocked to hear what happened.
Brown is among those hoping to get a call from family from Galveston.
“My brother has been out at night for 10 years now and so I was just saying, well, this is wrong, this is what I’ve been taught, so there is something more to the story that we haven’t been able to come up with,” said a friend of Brown’s. “People I’ve seen say that in the neighborhood but, you know, there just isn’t anything to it, you know? You know? You don’t know about this kid and I believe what he did. I was telling him, when is the last time you saw these little girls? He was very playful.”
Family members have raised the alarm.
“Our hearts go out to the family and anyone who is able to care for a child like this,” said family friend John Noyes. “… We are looking closely at each and every one of these children to see how long they’ve been in the water and all the stress, to really see what this human was like. We know from his interactions with people — those two things and the experience of looking for him — we know that this child is very very brave and we hope we can find that through an investigation that will help ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
Family members who have heard nothing about the child’s name include three kids.
“Just for the sake of the people at the door … we’re really, really sorry for what happened to these little girls,” said Amber Johnson of Houston. “Obviously, we were very concerned about her. We were very excited about her, and we hope that her story helps keep the investigation going and help the community better understand this and better understand [what] happened.”
She said she understands the children just wanted to play.
