Being a single parent is a challenging way of life; it requires patience, self-sacrifice, and financial output. I never realized what a struggle it would be, although I also didnt picture myself to end up the “single mom.” I was in a relationship with my boys father for seven years, we had both of them within a year and a half period and the balance of parenting, work, school & finding time for ourselves was a huge strain on our relationship. Needless to say, we split up for the better and here I am!

Because I have to divide my time and attention between both of my children, I made sure to take time out for myself. At least once a week I make a point to do something just for me. I sometimes lock myself in my room and read a book for an hour, or go to a movie alone. Once a month I spend an evening out with my girlfriends. We go to dinner and out dancing. Everybody needs a break now and then, and I make sure I make this time.

Single parenting has become more public and recognized nationwide. Being a single parent is terrifying, unclear and overwhelming, but it can also be very rewarding. Single or not, I am my childrens parent and the most important thing I can possess is my love for my children, my knowledge and my common sense. If I do the best I can, learn from my mistakes and love my children along the way, Im giving my all, any parent, single or married, can ever give.
