Same sex marriage seems to be a very controversial subject in today’s society. Many people do not agree with it what so ever, however others feel that same sex marriage is perfectly okay. This topic seems to be an on going argument because of the fact that it is abnormal to most, rather than normal and possibly a hard idea to get used to.

I personally don’t have an issue with same sex marriages. In the essay “I Want To Go To My Daughter’s Wedding,” I understand how Rochelle feels about her daughter getting married to another woman. Rochelle just seems to want her daughter to be happy, and if that means that she is gay and wants to marry another woman then so be it. Even though Rochelle approves of it, it doesn’t mean that it is just that easy to make a same sex marriage happen. In fact some churches may or may not marry a black man with a black woman for example. Either way, denying same sex marriages is something that is what I would call discriminating just like whites discriminated against colored people years ago. Macky Alston, who was married to another man said that “On a good day, Nick and I know that, even before our ceremony, our relationship was blessed by God and we were blessed by God through it. But our lives were also cursed with the shame of being regarded by society as anathema. The amount of work it takes to overcome this self-image is enormous. I believe this work is something only love can accomplish.” Macky Alston makes a great point that society is what is holding people back from speaking their mind.

The Oakland Press made a very good point in their article, “Same Sex Marriage doesn’t harm heterosexual marriage.” In this article, it states that “There was a time when women didn’t even have the right to vote and it took years to convince a majority the barrier was wrong,” this brings up a very good point because it is possible that there can be change it just may take time. The article goes on to say that, “So, custom which we often assume to be natural and immutable, can and does change.” The idea of same sex marriage however, still seems to be foreign to most, but there’s
