Same Sex Marriage? Why Not?
Ferrer 1Darren FerrerMrs. SolariAvid 3B2 March 2014Are We So Different        Same sex marriage? Why not? Who made up the rule that two men or two women cannot marry? Society has created the image that a marriage should only consist of a man and a woman, but the unity between two people consists of trust, loyalty, and love. These are qualities that two men and two women are able to feel for each other, just like a traditional couple would. Gay couples are more likely to be committed to their other half due to discrimination against them. They have a stronger bond because society believes it to be unacceptable to have a same sex partner. There are many gay individuals that are “in the closet”, but there are those who openly express their feelings for their significant other. These are the ones with the strongest bonds; they are not afraid to show society their affection towards the same sex. While their love may be unbreakable, the fact still remains that they cannot procreate leading to one conclusion: adoption. Many people believe that legalizing same sex marriage will bring equality to the gay community and help increase the adoption rate (“Gay Adoption”).        Who does gay marriage affect? No one. People believe it is morally wrong (Slick), but what is so wrong about a couple displaying their love for each other? Many people protest that it is not natural, that they will raise gay children, even that it will lead to people wanting to marry their pets (Aliasis). To say it is not natural is like saying, “We do not use air conditioning because it is not natural.” Marriage is “the legal or religious ceremony that formalizes the Ferrer 2decision of two people to live as a married couple.” (Alliejo2619). So why is it not legal for homosexual couples to marry in some states? The only people affected are the two people in the relationship.

Love, what is it? According to dictionary.com, love means “very strong affection: an intense feeling of tender affection and compassion.” In this definition it does not state that love is between a man and a woman, just that it is a strong affection towards another and what is more important in a relationship than love (AllieJo2619)? If gay people feel this strong affection and are happy with each other, they should be allowed to marry. According to Riccandi, Christians, who believe that homosexuality is a sin, have lost the big picture. In the midst of all your attention to details of various bible verses, you’ve lost the big picture. The cardinal virtue that Jesus taught his followers was love. If you value love, what’s the problem with two consenting adults making a commitment to each other out of love? Love is love. To insist that homosexuality is sinful and to deny them the right to get married is simply not loving, and therefore not Christian. To deny marriage to homosexuals would be discrimination (Filer). Gay marriage is like every other marriage, two lovers want to get married due to their strong feelings for one another. Is that really such a sinful deed?        “All men are created equal,” Well, apparently we don’t live by that creed anymore (iamthenovi). According to our human rights, we can do what we want, whenever we want. So, why is it a taboo for same sex couples to get married? Treating someone unequally is a human rights violation (iamthenovi). The gay community faces many hardships in trying to show their Ferrer 3affection in public. Bartenders may ask them not to kiss, they are denied some benefits that heterosexual couples receive, and are usually greeted in a rude or hostile manner. Despite these obstacles, the public is beginning to accept and acknowledge that homosexuals are here and they are not going away, but the majority of society are still against the idea of same sex couples. While everybody is free to have their own opinions, it is discrimination to treat the gay community differently because of their sexual orientation.
