In an organization, managers strive and hope to have employees that are effective and efficient. Motivation is none of the important key to help employees be happy at work and also have high productive job performance. A set of forces that lead up, directs and make people hold on to their effort in accomplishing a goal is defined as motivation .In relation to this, expectancy theory is one of the theories that can be used to motivate. The purpose of this research is to understand what motivation is, see how expectancy theory works and how it can be used to motivate me during my working experience in Eden Child Development Centre, year 2011.

As mentioned above, motivation is defined as a set of forces that lead up, directs and makes people to hold on to their efforts in accomplishing a goal To lead up an effort relates to the choices that people make about the amount of effort they want to put in their job. People can choose to work very hard and try their very best or just to do a proper job. Example like when a salesman is given to have 50 sales as a target, he can choose to work hard to reach as many sales as he can or when he reach his target, he just stop putting effort. When the force of leading is strong, people are more motivated and will work harder. Direction of effort means to choose where to put their effort in their job .One can choose to put in effort in learning up a new skill or in earning billions of dollars. A teacher will have to choose whether to learn computer so that she can improve in her teachings using computer or marks her books in time, following orders to have a secure job and higher pay. Next, holding on to their effort in accomplishing a goal is concerning how long will they put efforts into their jobs before they start giving up .When a person is tired in the middle of completing a task, he/she can choose to give up or strive until the very end and completes the task. A runner has to run 20km, but when he reached 15km, he is exhausted. He can choose to stop running or continue the race until the finish line. These 3 forces which are lead up, direct and hold on are at the heart of motivation When these forces are strong, people are more motivated to do their jobs.

As we all know, one of the things that motivates people is rewards. However, rewards that are attractive to one might not be attractive to another .Employees perception of the desired methods of rewards is also different from the actual reward given by their organization Expectancy theory assumes that people are motivated when they believe their efforts will result in good performance, and that good performance will be rewarded with
